Quad is ok, have one with faster fire rate but rarely use it. My personal favorites are AA explosive, Two Shot Explosive, Bloodied Explosive and Vampire's faster fire rate.

Thank you, it looks much better, I'll try it right away

^That about covers it. I would add Quad/Explosive, third attribute don't matter much.

Edit; Faster Fire Rate is now called Weapon Speed.

My issue with the handmade is that the clip size that gives you armor penetration is only 10 count which is why I run an anti armor because I don't have a quad. The upside to this gun is that unlike fixer and railway this gun can be fired full auto with much less recoil so I use it when I need to put on power armor and don't wanna swap builds or vats drain fusion cores.

I like The Fixer best, but then I have a total stealth build.

Nope, perforating mag (40% armor penetration) holds 20 rounds. Non-quad Railway Rifle has 10 round mag.

If you have proper stealth build Fixer's stealth bonus gives you nothing extra.

Out of all the Commando weapons, I'd recommend the Railway rifle.
Only downside is, it HAS to be a Quad, otherwise the magazine size is just laughably small.

But, even a single star Quad Railway RIfle, with an automatic reciever, can deal insane damage. Get your CRIT perks in Luck, and your Blight soup for crit damage, and it's insane.

Railway rifle is absolutely awesome, but has some downsides. If you run stealthy build they are loud af, especially if explosive, ammo is silly heavy and most of the time they are just total overkill considering the ammo weight. I carry them on all my toons that have commando perks but basically use them only against the tankiest bosses and run with handmades and fixers most of the time. That way I can manage with 300-400 spikes just fine and have more carry capacity to spare.
So yes and no, I definitely recommend Railway to all commandos, but also recommend using handmades/fixers against basic enemies and saving RR against toughest enemies. Especially if running stealthy build.

I was never able to master the Art of Sneaking. Even with the appropriate perk cards, a silenced weapon, Shadowed armor, it's just not working.
So whenever I want to Commando it's just a loud gun either way. Railway was a great fit for me. Yes, the ammo weight is the one big downside. You can carry around 500, maximum. In Daily Ops and Expeditions however, you can easily regain them, so for those, I use Railway. Outside of that, my Quad+Explosive Fixer. Worked fine by me.

Perks and silencers are important, but just a small part of good stealth build. Besides maxed Sneak perks and silencers you need maxed AGI, as many action points as possible and either Unyielding armor set if running low health (gives massive amounts of action points), full Chameleon armor set or Chameleon mutation with full Weightless armor set if running full health. Alternatively you can run Chinese Stealth Suit, but you still need high AGI and all perks. Any of them gives you crazy good stealth and enemies can actually bump into you and you stay hidden. Some events and Uplink daily ops disable stealth though so that's a bit annoying.

The best will depend on your character build. For example my commando is a full health junkie (drug addictions).

This way I can use AA, Aristocrats or Junkies fairly interchangeably. It opens up the RNG pool slightly.

That's what I suggest. Have a handful of first star effects you want so you end up discarding less Rollzebub rolls.

Expanding on what the Moomaster mentioned,
My favorite was an explosive bloodied I used on a non-bloodied character; close range shock trooper build. More damage I took the more I did, and if they didn't do enough damage to trigger the bloodied then I would eventually. Everything always died, myself included, it was probably my highest damage output build.

I'm sure you know this but, for others that may read this thread;

When using any weapon that fires explosive rounds, you Really need to have the Dense mod on your chest piece to avoid killing yourself when firing at an enemy up close.

I carry four rifles, three of which are Handmades. Three ranks of Arms Keeper to keep it manageable

My grail is anti-armor, faster fire rate but I've struck out with every roll. At this point I don't care what third star is (or even if it has one).

So I carry

Aristocrat's suppressed for patrolling the wild
Vampire non suppressed for events where I need some life steal
Anti-armor VATS accuracy for events when I'm not taking too much damage

The fourth rifle is a suppressed Fixer with a short barrel for indoors and CQC situations
