Automatic Railway Rifle - Yay or Nay?
So I'm primarily running Commando, but I'm also specced a bit into explosive for the heavier enemies. I also have ordnance express to hold all those a.grenade and hand grenades to make Michael Bay blush.

Then I found out the Railway Rifle can go automatic, and at first I thought it would lower the damage in exchange for the ROF like most guns do, but it actually doesn't. The problem is the recoil, it's almost as if it was designed to be only semi. Add to the fact that the one I have also has a 25% Weapon Speed legendary, so the kick is even more sensitive.

Is this even worth lugging around? Would getting rid of the 25% speed make a difference? I heard of using it in VATS but my vats don't last long. I kinda need something to hurt a single target (namely legendary bosses that have high health) that doesn't just blast me in the face like my auto grenade launcher does, since all those types of enemies are usually melee.

Quad automatic is a king, kills fast everything, but i personally think its boring.

Get two, or just carry enough kits to fix it on the spot and you won't need anything else.

If you like the sound of it, yes. Not for me, but I have never met an Engineman who didn't love his Choo Choo. Especially if it's a Choo Choo Death Boom (explosive).

An update to this: I didn't realize this at first, but the Long Barrel on this thing is actually what makes this uncontrollable. I changed it to short barrel and it's much more manageable.

Recoil is no worse than keeping a Mini gun on target.

Very worth keeping and using. That is a boss killer. Faster fire, crit damage and explosive are all good. For DPS the faster fire is king.

The auto railway is really a vats only weapon as vats magically completely eliminates the hefty recoil. Yes the shorter barrel reduces it but it greatly nerfs the effectiveness of the weapon. Plus using it out of vats you are missing out on a lot of damage anyway.

The railway rifle gets a low AP cost to fire in vats so using it in vats is very easy. If you have a decent commando build you should be able to fire it in vats with no issues of quickly running out of AP.

Oooh you're right. I forgot PER is for VATS too, not just AGI. I often forget about using VATS since it behaves in real-time, a huge departure for the series but necessary for obvious reasons.

Perception increases vats accuracy %. Agility is stealth and AP

I personally run an auto railway rifle for killing pretty much anything solo, and an auto tesla rifle for tagging during events. No other weapons, no grenades, no power armor.

https://www.falloutbuilds.com/builds/commando-crit-build-railway-rifle-and-tesla-rifle-waveclear-and-boss-killer/ is pretty close to teh build I run if you're curious.

I've got garbage armor, and a less than optimal legendary rolls except the Quad, and I can VATS crit for 800-1000

I just unlocked the Recoil Compensating Stock, so it definitely helps.

I've been running Quad Full-Auto Railway rifle with Commando+Low HP Unyielding build, with a strong focus on using VATS. Because full-auto without vats on that gun is literally impossible xD Felt like using aimbot most of the time, with insane damage output. It's also physical damage, which means you can "mark" bosses/tough enemies(Mirelurk Queen and such) with Endangerol Syringer first, then absolutely obliterate them in a blink of an eye.

The only 2 big downsides are:
1) even with the -50% slower break(legendary effect) AND with the INT perk that does the same... It still breaks super fast. An absolute Repair-kit hog. Not that it matters, with how often the Repair-kits drop tho, but still;
2) Even with Bandolier, ammo weights a friggin tonn... And it's pointless to even try to run this build without the perk. Sure, it's only 2 points in STR "wasted", but they are literally mandatory, otherwise you'll just not have enough ammo in the first place to run Full-auto.

Anyway... Is it fun? Yeah. Effective? Hell yeah! Quickly gets stale? Kinda... yeah. Put it on the wall display for now. Most likely will never come back to that one and instead get the quest reward one from the upcoming update - it's Bloodied PLUS double mag size, plus skin apparently. Then I'll come back to that build.

For now though... Running around with 4x Cremators - cuz only had enough legendary thingies to 3-star only 4x of em lol. Will expand to 5-6 maybe... Why? Because Slow Burn DOT from multiple Cremators stack - useful for bosses, hehe...

I switch to a crafting build before I repair it, and get 300% durability. Never breaks unless I forget to camp for hours. What is this quest you speak of? My interest is piqued, lol. If I can get a good Railway from a quest in the future I might stop trying to reroll a better Legendary.

Auto Rail is very much a VATS thing because its recoil is huge.

Very yay, been using one for a few days and it deletes most everything. Combine it with a good vats build, you can play this game in your sleep.
