doooo ittt.....
as for serius answer , drop rate wary from amo type , for example 308 is suited for sniper rifle and don't drop much , same case might be with 2mm or what ever gauss use.
good alternative for crafting are expeditions and special operatons , droping tons of amunition in grups.
it's not tho... tried relogging, switching to a plasma gun will make plasma cartridges drop, but i have not seen a single round of EC drop from anything i've killed with the gauss rifle.
It even affects ammo containers. where usually it would give you a small amount of the ammo for whatever gun you have, 2mm EC in this case, with a Gauss Rifle equipped it gives random ammo for different weapons. (like 5 different types in the same container)
Daily Ops
Expeditions
Ammo boxes and duffle bags
Night of the Moth
Contextual Ammo from containers and enemies (excluding those in Daily Ops and A Colossal Problem) have a greater chance to award ammo required by the equipped ranged weapon at lower levels. Super Mutants, Humans, Scorched and Robots are your best bet.
Some weapons won't grant contextual ammo such as ProSnap Deluxe camera, Syringer and Flare Gun, and will instead spawn an assortment of random, cheap ammunition.
Weapons that use more expensive ammunition such as Fusion Core or Plasma Core will be rare and will fail to spawn anything, even while using Scrounger.

That sounds like what is happening here. is that normal for the Gauss Rifle?
Gauss Rifle or Shotgun in Daily Ops is all you need to farm ammo. Doing just one DO run and collecting all the ammo will net you at a minimum 500 rounds.
Also, 2mm EC is one of the easier ammo types to craft. Pick up all the cans you see lying around. That's all the lead you need. Go to top of the world and grab all the can traps there, then go to every Blood Eagle camp, tons of cans.
Use Super Duper and Ammo Factory. You will be swimming in 2mm EC in no time.
Anyway, if you see my vendor/camp online, I should have your ammo for 1 cap each, or similar low price (I think I have those plasma cores at 25 each since they seem to be uncommon, but that plasma gun ammo is pretty common enough where 1 cap seems fine). Missiles are 2 caps each. If I'm not using power armor, fusion cores are 5 + 5 per every 25 stored energy (so 100 charge is 25 caps and 25 charge is 10 caps). They all seem to sell okay, though I really wish some of the more common ammo could be sold in bulk or at decimal costs.
You'll know it's me because I got like 10000 ammo in the inventory of the shop...It's mainly all I sell. That and plans. I also have extremely overpriced bobble heads, but that's more because I want to stockpile them and that's the price I'd be willing to part with them at.
As for finding ammo, I've found the main ammo type you find is whatever your equipped main weapon is.
Increasing your luck also helps. I don't presently have the ammo finding perk, since I kinda have it in excess as is.
Wish there was a way to sell ammo to npc vendors, as that's normally how I'd profit in a fallout game (I'm mainly unarmed/melee in most fallout games, so I view ammo as currency).
That being said tho, even though I still have it drop, I have been noticing what seems to be smaller amounts being dropped on each one recently.
I used to see a good amount of double digit drops from things, 12, 15, 16 or more per thing, but I've been getting a lot more single digit drops lately. 2 or 3, 5, 6 etc.
I had a pretty decent stock of it for a while but I have had to start dipping into that a bit more than usual lately.
And yes, I know Railway Spikes is literall JUST steel only, no lead, but... Let's just say - the less time I spend in the converter UI - the better. 1500 2mm = 7000 points right away. Yet biggest conversion for Spikes is 300 ammo for 1000 points, ugh. I'd rather spend time farming Lead (by actually playing the game), than clicking through the converter UI.
But as epople reviously said... Some weapons - or rather, AMMO TYPES - drop way less through the whole Contextual ammo system. 2mm AND Fuel are two of them, hence why I convert the easiest-to-craft 2mm into Fuel through the converter. While other ammo types drop in stupid amounts(5mm as an example).
If you need tips on how to farm a ton of 2mm ammo - I cen tell you. If you want, that is.
