Well the most popular automatic rifle (and semi) is The Fixer, its fairly easy to get access to as well, shotguns especially the double barrels are incredibly efficient for ammo, I went into the Tax Evasion expedition last night with about 200 shells and came out with nearly 700 lol, as opposed to my pepper shaker which can vomit out 2k+ shells on a single boss (Scorched beats queen) easily. Cold Shoulder is a special shotgun you can get for 500 'scripts' (another in game currency you get doing expeditions and ops i think) or 700 atoms in the atom shop (real money currency, but you can earn a fair amount of that from doing certain challenge catagories like the ones under Character).
If your feeling like being different, Handmades are nice looking automatic rifles (What I like least about the combat rifle and shotgun, they look too much alike and are pretty boring visually) the problem with commando is it inherently spends more ammo by design to get the job done, but any VATS crit builds with higher luck and a lot of perk cards that feed into vats crits will make it more efficient - takes a lot of minmaxing and lego card leveling to do comfortably IMO but at lower levels shouldnt be as much of a concern, i'd focus on accuracy at your level if you are sticking with commando. (I personally hem and haw between non-auto rifles and shotguns, my only real complaint about shotguns is by their very nature you need to get close to do work, which is really annoying in public events, where other range weapons often just post up and spray the area down)
I like the fixer/stealth build but it gets boring. Right now my commando is running around with an enclave flamer and an enclave sniper rifle (for those pesky fliers). Does incredible damage since they count as rifles and you can kill things before caution hits danger. Also the enclave sniper rifle is never really talked about because of enemy resistances, but I can hit things in the face for 900 damage with it from 100 meters away. Flamer is great too if you can get a Vampiric one with a bloody build (UNY SS armor), it's kind of like cheating. You can stand in front of Mama Scorchbeast with it lol. Sigh.
Following! Funny enough came with same question and saw your post.
Tons of "oh go bloody fixer" floating around but that takes some doing to really get into it, or at least seems that way.
bloodied is strong cause it synergiezes so well with unyeilding armor (up to +3 stats except END, per piece of armor), Adrenal mutation (+dmg with lower health) aaaand the nerd rage perk card as well as a few other cards like serindipity (chance to totaly avoid damage when below 40% health) honestly its kind of stupid how over the top its allowed to stay for so long, the only thing that really messes with them is reflection mutation enemies.
Other commando builds can still be good and fun, but its sort of like choosing between a combat rifle and a pipe gun, but in this case the pipe gun is usually anti-armor, twoshot, or one of the lesser damage boosting prefixes combined with a 2star and 3star effect that increases vats efficiency (Lucky or VATS Enhanced). What makes the fixer so popular is it comes by default even when not a legendary with +movement speed while sneaking, greater stealth in shadows, higher base damage than standard combat rifles aaaand it comes with a silencer and armor piercing magazine. then you can use legendary crafting to try and turn it into a real monster.
Aesthetically its an abomination however , IMO, I much prefer the visuals of the lever action rifle (of which a pretty nice one is one of the rewards from the Most Wanted event) and the massive numbers behind the black powder rifles.
The good and bad news is that shotguns are getting a range boost but a vats damage reduction on the PTS
In terms of weapons
Melee < Pistols < Shotguns < Rifleman < Heavy weapons <<<<<<<< Commando
Melee is only at the bottom of the pile because you have to get close and in events you will never get hits or kills
Commando dominates due to absurd synergy with unyielding bloodied
+145% damage, massive vats boosts, etc etc etc
You can get absolutely Looney Tunes levels of DPS in Fallout 76. The game is not even remotely balanced.
Shotgun is and will be fine. You can even level up Commando cards while you use a Shotgun without Perks to support it. You will be fine.
cons of bloody stealth fixers:
> they are not lore friendly, they look like a weapon from Counter Strike
> sneaking around all the time looks silly
> bloody builds are generally very boring in my opinion, you one shot everything until the mob get you, then when a mole rat hit you for 1 dmg you are dead because you have no health whatsoever. Especially in public events like Scorched Earth people with bloody builds die like flies and always scream for help to revive them
Play however you want.
