Unless you want the Slug Buster weapon you get from siding with the raiders, you can choose to make them split the gold. Then you stay friends with both sides.
If you side with the settlers you don't really get anything special.
You select one side and then move on with that faction. You can sill max reputation for both sides though afterwards.

Depends on whether you want to do more with that character than get the achievement. If you are going to consider that character a throw away, you can skip all quests from the other side, and many of the other quests and just run for it.
