I tend not to use private servers unless I have to complete all the weekly and dailies very quickly, otherwise I just go onto public.
You can start a public team on private, only problem is that you are the only person in it, but it does count for most of the do stuff in teams, unless they specify that there must be other members in it, or require you to go to their camp or what not. But for kill xx creatures while in a team, or complete events in a team it will work.
Private servers can be really cool if you have a lot of friends that play the game too. The server will stay open as long as 1 player with FO1st is on it even if the one that opened the server session is offline, so like if you theoretically had friends with FO1st in a bunch of time zones, it could be open 24/7 outside of maintenance and always only used by your friends. Not everyone needs 1st, just 1 person in the server has to have it at all times. That's a very niche scenario but it's possible.
I also like to use a private instance to build a new camp in peace. Or just to chill with friends.
2. You already looted too many this day, the game tracks what you pick up and at some point puts that thing on cooldown, oversimplified speaking.
Also as we are 4-6 people playing, we can be sure no one messes anything up, like radaiation rumble starts and either a high level who only cares about killing for xp starts instantly or a noob starts instantly.
Also hardened mass and glowing mass. Bomb Whitespring and no need to hurry to get the kills and the loot before someone else kills alll the glowing ones.
Custom worlds is nice when I want to experiment with camp stuff or trying new weapons without burning up resources, or just screwing around for no reason other than just because.
I use the Custom world to try out camp builds, otherwise I'm never on it.
