Besides that, Fallout 76 takes place quite a while before any of the other games. And its in an area of the world none of the other games even mention. The other games would give you more information about the Brotherhood or the events of the war, but aren't really necessary.

If you want a true rpg and less MMO play 3. NV and 4 first. Use of graphics overhaul mods is recommended.
Fallout 3 does the best job of introducing you to the universe out of the box, you can skip over 1 and 2 (They are pretty brutal isometric games and play waaaaaaaay different) but even 3 shows its age pretty well - not to mention its still a bugthesda product so it has that going for it as well. Still, the atmosphere and world it introduces set the series into a whole new field and launched the fallout series popularity through the roof.
Fallowing on its heels is Fallout New Vegas, which loses a lot of the atmospheric storytelling FO3 had but improved the combat a bit (aim down sights, wooo! not kidding) and dials up the silly factor, FO3 had a lot of cultural references and tongue and cheek jokes but new vegas just went all out in that regard. Neat thing is there is a mod out there that lets you combine fallout 3 and fallout new vegas called Tale of Two Wastelands, can be a little tricky getting it to work perfectly but IMO its the perfect way to experience the two games.
Fallout 4 is basically the base game for 76, the gameplay and unplay are GREATLY improved over the 3 series and it has the first story I felt actually compelled to complete urgently. However it lost a lot of the fallout charm as you are encouraged to repeatedly run back and forth across the map to 'help' settlements and pick up everything that isnt nailed down in a kleptomania simulator so you can build at each settlement. First time I played this one I got absolutely bored out of my gourd after about three hours and just wasnt into it till I discovered in the difficulty section you could set it to 'survival' and THEN it got interesting.
------------------
Story for 76 is.....basically a chain of quests that exist to prepare you for the standard issue grind you might expect of any MMO. The story it tries to tell isnt bad really, but you have to really hunt for it at times and a lot of it is only told through the environment, audio logs and text logs. The music is pretty nice, this is standard for all fallout games notably and this is where the the tv series fell flat on its @$$, but 76 isn't really a game you play for the story....or the gameplay really....its more ....something to do.
If you have all the time in the world to play everything ever then you could waste that time arguing on internet forums about 1 and 2 vs 3 and 4
I never played 1 and 2
Your profile is a level 0 as well. The same is true for a number of people in this thread. Private profiles don't mean anything at all in the end. As for the 75 other games thing, he wouldn't be the first to believe something like that. It is unlikely he actually thought that, however.
