Nope, just 2 different skins afaik.

Buying an item from the shop which is also available in game, unlocks that item for all your characters. Past, present, and future. Buying it in-game only unlocks it for the character you bought it with.

While the coop is a bad example of the value in this, this holds true for Allies and Collectrons, which gives this system significantly more value.
