Bow vs Compound Bow vs Crossbow

Thinking about running the archer build for fun soon. Any suggestions for what exactly should I run and what mods/types of arrows should I get ASAP?

Bows are buggy.

I'd play with a basic Bow for a while before you commit to getting a Compound Bow or Arrow mods.

That is all you turely need to know but once you seen how buggy they can be then you might want to back out that archer build or roll with it and carry on wanting to do that to yourself.

Crossbow have no charge mechanic and are more like a gun. Plasma or explosive bolts/arrows are probably the better 2 options, poison won't do much besides make the enemy glow green (can be ok to highlight).

In the end it'll play similar to a suppressed single shot gun so no good for hordes but good for stealth.

What buggy is there right now?

I tried scrochbeast yesterday and wasn't too convinced, mainly there seems the vats-no-hit-lock issue still, so you would have to switch out of VATS and back again, to hit at all. Not sure with damage, other. (Standard bow is anti armor + criticals prime compound bow.)

Then the bow used to get stuck sometimes, but some right click would mend it, didn't encounter on the current patch level. Typically i use VATS, e.g. with scorchbeasts, but i might also headshot super mutants manually for fun/malpractice.

(For the OP: i think crossbows are rifleman perks, fairly inaccurate, and so on, tried once or twice, threw away, read some others do fancy those, though. Now my pistols character has slots free on perception, and mostly i run commando, sometimes switch in archery. So of course prime compound bow, for maximum damage, unless you don't have endless amounts of stable flux and want to use it a lot, in which case a compound bow without prime arrows will have to do. And before you have that, a bow wasn't that bad either - for me executioners + 25% or something and zealots worked well months ago.)

They are great if you go with a Stealth Build as the AI is stupid and even with Exploding Arrows they wont be able to find you. I like them and find it fun to play with, but you are not going to be putting out a ton of Damage so dont count on it for Bosses.

They actually do something at a distance, e.g. prime anti armor + vats-crits compound bow. Don't nail me down on how many arrows you need for a colossus, though, tried once and mixed gauss pistol (more bugged patch level) and bow.
