That is the in effect aesthetic of the Fallout universe it is based more on the 40-50's than a more modern time period.

Robbie the Robot Knows. It's based on what my Generation thought the world would be like in the future. Still waiting for my flying car..But I do have a Jetpack now anyway....Long Live Buck Rodgers.

It's called "Retro Futurism" and as Wack-A-Mole said it's based on some ideas from the mid 20th century about what the future might look like.

I think I've read that the Fallout universe sort of saw a resurgence of the 1950s style leading up to the great war.

less a resurgence and more of a they never really left that style of look and thought processes

they didn't invent a LOT of the things we have in the modern world, and they did 'invent' a few things that cannot exist in ours

like they don't have small computers because they just didn't invent transistors and thus didn't get the whole followup on them

I always have said "It's just Sims with Guns now". But I like the Mole Generators...

Yeah, I remember seeing something years ago explaining that, since transistors were never discovered, and electronics never developed beyond vacuum tubes etc, the aesthetic kinda never moved on as well maintaining a Retro-Futuristic style...

Sorry, but that guy is a moron.

His whole argument is based on the assumption that the nuclear holocaust would magically eradicate everything that existed - both physically and digitally - prior to the Great War of 2077.

He's just a sad FO1/FO2 fanboy who only accepts a Mad Max apocalypse - in pixely low resolution, so you don't have to bother about any artstyle anyway.

Not arguing your point to "Random YouTube Blabber", but that pixel art was glorious and surprisingly detailed.

Yeah, it was glorious.
Back in the mid-1990s when 3D graphics were complete garbage.
The graphics of FO1, FO2 and Tactics do indeed look better than the ugly low-poly PS2 graphics of FO:BoS.

However, nothing beats the immersion of a first person view game with modern more realistic graphics.
Even back then playing Quake 2 with my 12MB Voodoo2 3D accelerator addon card already gave a glimpse into what the future would hold.

I personally think FO2 was one of the best games out there, it's where I started with Fallout.

But apparently behind the scenes it was a mess and even not considered to be 'right'.

bethesda wont make sense of it why should any of you.

Someone opined long ago that the Fallout universe is the future people envisioned in the 1950's, with atomic cars and robot servants for example. Then completely crapped on by an atomic war. Resulting in a wasteland with 50's movie giant mutated monsters.
