There's a reason for that. It's called you're in the wrong spot.

Building(not just 76) are still early in its existence. There are issues that plague build modes across all games. Snap points in particular can be real ♥♥♥♥♥♥. In the case of 76, you probably need to adjust your camera or the angle you're coming at it from and spin it a bit. Sometimes things get in the way that aren't really in the way.

Without knowing where your building exactly, assuming I'm familiar with the terrain and the things you can build on in that particular area, this is all the advice I can give.

Normally, the causes for pieces not snapping into place are that its out of bounds, intersecting with something outside your build or you have snapping disabled.

out of bounds or snapping is disabled

The 'fun' part is your own character in first person can cause the issue as it blocks the placement. Never used to do this to the level it does now, but it does...

Move your character away and use the mouse scroll to place at distance or as mentioned, park your character far away and use free cam.

Lining up multiple snap points can also be a problem, but in 76 you don't realize it's happening. It never occurred to me until No Man's Sky made snap points visible, once you could see it happening, the thing I was trying to place locking onto the thing behind it instead, I realized I could adjust my camera so they weren't lined up and it snapped fine. After applying this idea to 76, it seems to work better(not perfectly, there's obviously more going on), since you can't actually see the snap points, you just gotta try it when you're having trouble.
