Be a responsible pet owner. If it's too hot or cold outside for you, it's too hot or cold for them.
Pets anchor to the camp module. It's placement can make all the difference.
The pet anchors to the camp module and it is also where they spawn at load in. Placing it in a location that can harm your pet will probably kill it.
For example if it's too high they'll take fall damage. If it's on a foundation the pet may spawn before the foundation and it will kill it. If it's close to water the radiation from the water may kill it. If it's too close to a random mob spawn the mobs will spawn from the camp module with the pet and kill it.
What I've found is that making the camp module inaccessible causes the pet to spawn away from the camp in safety. The one camp I have a pet is a mechanics garage where the camp module is in a narrow location that is too small for a Deathclaw to enter. The DC always spawns a safe distance away.
(No camp switching involved, or no attack happened, it was like how the robots in the Enclave base will just fall over dead sometimes when you get near).
Dam you MOOOO... WHY!!!!!
Like I said, if it's too hot/cold for you it's too hot/cold for them. Bring your pets inside (or put them in a barn).
Feel for ya
Its more fun when the pet can
a - Die in transit after being tamed
b - Die randomly in your base
c - Get killed randomly by super weak enemies
d - Die randomly by falling through the map
e - Die by players exploiting grief mechanics
f - Die by players attacking it too quickly when they are laggy
g - Wander off and maybe... die... maybe... sometimes just wander back, but sometimes those lost pet posters don't help
And people wonder why Bethesda doesn't offer pet insurance in-game... Ok, maybe that's just me.
