Voice isn't much needed but it would be useful if your trying to set up an expedition.
Count me among those turning voice chat off. The few times when it would be interesting, fun or useful are far outweighed by the drawbacks, like some dude making baby talk to his cat, or the asthmatics who have the mic right in close.
Yeah, shut that off. No text chat and no voice chat make for better experience. For curmudgeons like me, anyway.

Honestly if that were still the default but you could just choose to not hear anyone else talking I would probably prefer it because you cannot usually get the random atmosphere of people talking about completely insane things in your video game anymore
Very rare to have people ranting and raving on the open mic for me. Usually it is only players asking a question about something in game or for help or trying to make friends for me.
I personally just block them personally so that I will never encounter them again if they're the sort that spam nonsense on an open mic...
