Events are the big Icosahedron (d20) shaped icons on the map.
Challenges are black diamond shaped icons.
The black square shaped icons I think are your current objective...? I'm not honestly sure because this game doesn't explain jack squat to new players.
oh... yeah I've had a few of those that piss me off. Like protecting the responder bot while he opens the 3 doors with alarms. After that he's like... "go enjoy the loot inside I'll just wander home" ... but if you don't guard him all the way home you fail the mission.
Honestly starting to think bots are invading Steam discussions. Seeing 'not saving progress' as being an issue and reason for refunding games like Destiny 2, Black Desert Online, and more.
The event to kill the farm supervisors isn't a part of the quest. It is proximity triggered when getting too close to the farm research centre, and it isn't on cool down.
The quest to analyse the water samples should still be at the last stage you did. There may be a slight loss of progress as the game only saved quests at set points, usually after each step.
