What happens to you is you hit level 50 and encounter level 50+ enemies, but you being a newish player likely don't have your build in order or even proper weaponry that is on-level for your build - so yeah you're gonna have a hard time.
You have now entered the endgame so to speak, so you should just perk up your build and equipment.
Since you now don't level your gear anymore, it's time to hunt for the "good" stuff as it won't outdate anymore. You know, get your favourite weapon at max level, always assuming your build works.
PEBCAK, essentially.
The extra diseased mobs are a great thing(if you don't have the challenge done for collecting them all anyways(and if you do, they're just normal mobs, most of the diseases are easily ignored, as they don't do anything important)), the rest of it isn't so bad either once you get some half decent gear on, beat up the raiders of steel and take their combat armour if you don't have access to anything bigger. The rest is just a matter of patience gathering bullion/reputation for the end game gears, welcome to the beginning of the grind.
A handy with a flamer was tougher than an assaultron.
I started playing in the fall so I would have been too low to notice it. What I DO notice is they come with a lot more BS now.
using melee with melee build perks can take things out in 3 or 4 swings, roll with power armor, while you look for stronger weapons. if you can manage to save some caps, find someone selling some decent instigating, or two shot weapons at there camp.
typically you want to invest your caps first in a really good level 50 weapon, this will carry you through to you level up more an build your perk load outs.
