How long it takes will depend on how fast you want to go, how much you skip, how much you use guides, etc.
It can take quite a long time, these days, if you don't try to rush or speed run it. I take my time, explore, and get side tracked easily, so for me, it's over a hundred hours, maybe even more. Speed running it, with guides, only going where you need to, maxing your daily Caps, and buying gear, avoiding side missions and exploring, I don't know, maybe 20-30 hours? Probably even less, honestly, especially if you avoid the Seasons, Events, skip all the Lore, don't listen to NPC's,
don't do Dailies, etc.
But since its an MMO, once you finish the stories, and start doing the events, cause thats all you get after all stories are told, it starts to get grindy. Its severely missing multiplayer content thats deep and engaging tbh. No dungeons to grind for example. No raids. Two big events, one is on the free roam and the other within a dungeon (the only dungeon multiplayer content and its fun, but its one boss so it gets old fast).
It takes maybe 5 hours to finish the main campaign as a high level. Around the same it takes to finish on other bethesda games if you just doing the main quest at high level.
Are there side quests and NPC's that give side quests?
There is the original main quest.
Wastelanders main quest.
Side quests in the world.
Side quests given by NPCs you "invite" to your camp.
Side quests that aren't given quests, but things you need to do to get something (Alien Blaster + Ammo).
Group events.
Also there are those quests you get from camp companions, and the quests for raiders and settlers with is the split part of the mainquest later in the game.
There are some old side quests from before wastelanders aswell, but most ppl don't like them either. Some of them are required if you want to craft for example BOS power armor or enclave power armor. The side quests are quite long, like the figher guild quests in skyrim.
Later in december they will add a new mainquest involving brotherhood of steel, there will be a small quest first, leading to a bigger quest later.
