If that is not the ideal situation; the combat shotgun works very well at close range. It has high damage output and packs a big punch. Dismembering robot arms is easy. Often you can punch out their arms and legs and they will instantly die. Or they will burn and die or self-destruct.
If a shotgun is not your style - try the 10mm smg from the brotherhood quest finale. It is a higher level requirement and you may not be able to find it easily; but it is quite effective against robots due to its high armour penetration ability by default. You can also stack an armour penetrating magazine for added effect. On top of that you can add scorched killer's receiver for added effect against scorched. So this guns becomes an ideal 2-in-1 gun. A one star legendary for armour penetration would complete this gun.
Most robots' tough spots is the head (if they have a tough spot) which won't get full damage from your attacks and if you target the weak spots (fusion cores, combat inhibitors) the damage is multiplied.
(some exception like wall mounted turrets)
Ohhhhh I'm going to have to try that! lol
