Two handers get a 5% damage bonus for every point of strength.
The legendary perk Hack and Slash will allow you to have an area melee attack at random. It is fairly strong as it looks like an explosive but is actually melee damage.
VATS attacks are considered power attacks. Used with Hack and Slash can provide good damage. Unlike gun VATS, melee VATS should be used sparingly.
My method is to sprint to target and only enter VATS just before the attack. Cancel VATS to run around, enter for the chance of a boom.
Baseball bats can come in rare colours, yellow, indigo and pink. These can only be found, not added or unlocked as a plan. There are farming routines on the net.
Baseball grenades can give you an on theme ranged attack.
