It's used to craft some armour sets, as mentioned above, don't bother though unless you want how they look, you're given a better set of power armour for free in a quest line then anything for gold(Hellcats), and the secret service is the best non-power armour set, and doesn't need the vault steel stuff.
Solar is mediocre
Thorn is also mediocre
Hellcats is a superior choice rendering you nearly immune to non energy weapons
Union PA is the superior defensive pvp choice rendering you easily 95% immune to all sources of damage - and with good rolls 99.999999995% damage reduction from everything (standing still or while jetpacking) [gives you overkill poison immunity, so you can throw on the fire legendary perk for fire immunity, then get 5x cryo for 125 cryo immunity)
-Basically gives you the absurd defensive protection of power armour, with built in immunity to poison, freeing up a legendary perk card for immunity to fire, and then you roll it for at least 2 cryo parts to be functionally immune to cold (3-4 is absolutely immune to it)

Assassins - Cryo - Sentry on all pieces (functionally impossible unless you cheat its 31 years of crafting assuming you play HARD every day for it for HOURS)
