Is taking cover useless?
I mean I take cover to try to avoid some damage or even gain some distance but it seems like 1-2 in every 4 shots hit regardless.... just feels like it barely makes a difference if I'm in the open or not.

Get good.

Really. If you're in cover and getting hit, then you're not properly in cover.

Cover seems to work for me. When getting hit, back around a corner, if the enemy comes looking for you, by the time he rounds the corner you can nail him with recovered AP.

I have also backed away on a raised surface, such as boardwalk or building roof, and the enemy below that was hitting me keeps shooting into the walk or side of building.
Waited a few seconds, then edge back forward and nailed them.

It worked. If you got shot then you're not completely covered.

This game doesn't cover for you the way it does in, say, Mass Effect games, which actually gives you a button to press to take cover, and it will give you PERFECT cover that keeps you safe from all incoming attacks. In this game, you have to make your own cover by finding structures and terrain to hide behind. And those structures and terrain don't always offer perfect cover. Your body may be partially exposed because the column you are hiding behind is not perfectly solid, perfectly vertical, matching your height perfect, etc. This is similar to when you VATS enemies that are partially blocked by structures or terrain. And if you can VATS enemies (with a good VATS chance), that means you are exposed to the enemies as well, as it should be the case.

This is one of the annoying things, about this game well not just with this game with Fallout 4 as well, it basically boils down to the ermm, hit boxes I think the name is, pretty much where does the game think things like a wall ends and its shape, rather than what does this wall look like as to where ends and shapes to a player.

I can give you an example or at least could have done as I have no idea if it still does or not, but there used to be a wrecked wall in the area around the broken dam in the south part of the map, it had a window in the middle part of it, and you should have been able to shoot through said window, you could not though, you could try and it looked like the bullets were hitting a wall rather than passing through it.

So me hiding behind something not being able to see them or them me classes as them still being able to shoot me? i.e hiding behind a car for example.

The enemy can still see you by the window and if you can vats them through it, they can too.

Unless you are behing a door or something, you can still get shooted, even if "theoretically" or "in real life" it shouldn't happen.

Remember, this is not an FPS game, it's an RPG actually (at least it tries to be), and in RPG, your enemy can see you depends on how your stealth skill works and their vision/accuracy. If their acc/vision dictates you are visible, even though you're crouching behind a car, you're seen and will be shot at.

Dude I don't wear Power Armor I wear full Secret Service which is not Power Armor. Clearly you don't know much about the game, and less then I do. Its legendary gears but not power armor, and its crafted on a normal armor bench. Do the DLC quest line for vault break in to get the gold. Then farm public events for notes to trade in for more gold. Then spend said gold to get plans for the secret service armor.

And you might not want to hide behind cars as they are like a mini nuke going off unless you are 3 star fireproof & have on decent armor.

This. Due to hit boxes, cover isn't always what it seems, esp. partial cover.

Trees usually work but some don't - which seems more realistic to me since trees typically aren't bullet proof but you might get lucky. Same thing with other structures. I think it's silly to hop behind a wall and assume the plaster will protect you. It's nice that it is effective. Inside a blast radius you still get hit from explosives but a wall will stop the outer effect. It's a simulation so it's pretty damn flawed, no argument there. :wwpirate:

Cover works, its just that if the mob decided to shoot eventhough the animation is not played out you get hit. If the mob moves or reloaded the entanglement is broken and you gain the benefit of cover. its basically the same mechanic in every game like this.
Mooman Mar 28, 2023 @ 11:03am
Mobs don't fire projectiles, unless missiles or plasma, but hit scan weapons.

If the game says the shot will hit the moment of firing it will hit regardless of whether you moved into cover or not. What you see on screen isn't what happens behind the scenes.

As a side note VATS uses an invisible projectile from you to the target to determine hit chance. If you've ever watched how that sometimes lingers when a mob moves out of line of sight you'll understand how flawed the games combat is.

Litterally taken melee hits through wall it is useless to an extreme degree
Vinnolo May 27, 2024 @ 1:32pm
the only way to actually take cover is to completely break line of sight with the enemy, crouching is useless for cover, since if i remember right your hitbox is the same as standing even when crouched, thats also why you cant crouch under geometry, your hitbox is always the same no matter what
