You can earn them and 1st comes with a 1650 atom allowance, you'll find that you will accumulate some over time. It's worth it, and it's nowhere near as predatory as it sounds.
You don't need to buy 1st to play through the game, like people said, start considering it if you want to play past level 50.
Better yet, instead of buying game and Fallout 1st, subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for a month instead. The game is included on it.
Yeah, both it and Fallouts 3 and 4 are on Game Pass basically permanently since Microsoft bought Bethesda. Can play on PC and on Xbox One/Series with shared progress, afaik.

Never pay full price for this game either. Its still a buggy mess years on. Its basically whats known as a cash grab game. Minimum effort + maximum monetization.
LOL, you clearly aren't an MMO or gacha player. This game is light on monetization.
I agree. Having played every MMORPG under the sun, this is really light on microtransactions. It also has some of the best quality season grinds I've witnessed (even when looking at things like Division, Paladins, or something similar).
They also give three times the amount (as far as buying power) of premium currency for subs compared to things like Rift, SWTOR, ESO, or Star Trek Online.
Longer answer : It depends on if you have the disposable income. I pay for the subscription once a year, because I like the items it offers and I can afford it. Could I play without it and still enjoy the game? Absolutely. There is no "pay to win" in this game, because there is no "winning". It's basically an open-ended survival RPG with no true "endgame". Is the scrap box useful? I suppose, if you're a packrat and you absolutely have to pick up everything that isn't nailed down. Is it necessary? No, not really.
I can afford to pay for 1st, so I do. But you can still enjoy the game if you don't want to or can't afford to pay for it.
Also definitely buy the game on sale.
The way the game's servers work, ping doesn't matter unless it's 10+ seconds, 90% of what the server does is authentication
I don't know what you mean by "serious crafter" cause there's nothing serious to craft.
if you tell me you need F1st to build a big mansion, you're wrong.
if you tell me you need F1st to craft ammo, again you're wrong.
if you tell me you need F1st to craft weapon/gear, completly wrong...
been doing all of this without 1st.
