If you are in a group, you get XP for everything your group kills, as well as loot from them. This is also why you keep a fast firing weapon on you, preferably explosive, just to tag enemies at events. You get to loot any legendaries that die in your proximity regardless of if you hit them or not as well. And you still get event rewards for just being there.
