so what will happen once bethesda shut off the servers?
it seems pointless to invest time in this as you are likely going to lose your characters

So you don't play any online games at all for fear of "one day" the servers shutting down? Seems like a very trivial existence. Feel sorry for you

By that time there will be something else to play... I've been playing online games since BBS Tele-Arena (look it up) in the 90's
Ultima Online... Everquest... all good games and worth going back to. Original servers are down but someone is hosting the games for free now.
Someone will host the Fallout 76 when Bethesda decides to call it quits.

A service is never eternal.
World of Warcraft is going for nearly 20 years now.
Anarchy Online also reaching nearly 20 years.
Asheron's Call from Microsoft/Turbine ran 16 years.
Age of Empires Online, Microsoft shut it down and private servers have kept it running.

The only company I would ever worry about shutting servers down is Electronic Arts. They have done so numerous times in the past. Earth and Beyond and some Motor City game.

Heck, Ultima Online is still online and thriving. 25 years. I've never seen anyone with this persons beliefs before it's really strange.

And Square-Enix since they shutdown Babylon's Fall only 6 months after its release as well as Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier.

I dont care, i have a life.

-What will happen when my boss fires me?
Search for a better job and continue your life.

-What will happen when my console or pc goes obsolete?
If i have funds to invest then buy a new one, if dont then not, and continue living.

-What will happen when you die?
Dont know, noone returned from dead and told us what is waiting out there.

When you finish thinking about stupid things, let us know please.

I think given how ridiculous this persons post is and how easy it is to dismantle literally everything about it and the fact they haven't replied to anything, I'm going to assume they're just trolling to get a rise out of everyone.

Some MMOs that have shut down in the past have continued on via private servers. But even if you could do that, would you even want to go back if no content was forthcoming? Would you even want to logon to FO76 if you knew nothing new would ever happen?

I stopped playing Final Fantasy games online because the game were too content with wasting your time with time sinks.

I do not mind wasting time playing video games, but when you make it so you have to wait and hour or two for a ferry, wait for a hours for day to change to night, etc it becomes too bothersome.

If/When 76 Closes Servers, Nothing of Value will have been lost. What happens after will just be funny or sad. Depending on your point of view. I for one will hope the same fate that doomed them to start will doom us to never be rid of 76. The base code will leak out, it will be modded out to Hades and the private community that broke 76 will run it better in private spaces.

This is the only live service game I play, not really because I worry about what happens when they are shut down but because its the only one I enjoy and I play it with my wife.

I have played it for two years, put in over 600 hours, completed all the seasons during that time, built two camps spending way too much time on them and spent less money on the game that what is cost at launch.

I knew full well when I started the game that Bethesda are a scum company that does not give two ♥♥♥♥♥ about any of us. One day will shut the game down, that's OK with me as I will have had my fun and I knew what I was getting into.

I think if you play a live service game you should know the deal and accept it, if you don't like it then don't engage with as these companies will never change and no government will make them.

Yeah that sounds incredibly tedious. For me I have kid who needs my attention every so often so I can't play MMO's with long progression tasks like raids or long dungeons. It's why I do enjoy 76 because I can play it in small chunks and quit if I need to quickly do something for my kid.
