handguns are drastically underpowered, and the damage increasing perks are in bad specials (ones that have a ton of other better perks)
non-auto guns are also very very low DPS, slow rate of fire, long reload times and the like maybe 1/10 - 1/20th of the DPS output of the automatic versions... 1/5th the dps of heavy guns
teams have no downside to being in, you don't need to be near anyone or do things with them for some pretty huge potential benefits
Skills in this game are represented by perk cards. You can freely change out what perk cards you have active at any time (provided you have enough points the the appropriate SPECIAL stat to slot the card). So there is no need to keep a crafting perk active at all times. You can switch to it when you need to craft or repair, then switch back to something more useful for combat. The same applies to the lock picking and computer hacking cards.
From time to time, events pop up on the map. In the beginning one of these is especially good to do. If you see something about packs of wolves to the north west of Vault 76 (around a ferris wheel on the map), go and kill the pack leaders. It isn't hard, and each of the three pack leaders will drop a random legendary item. Also for getting gear, don't be afraid to go back and clear out areas you have already been to. Enemies, and the gear they drop, scale with your level.
Be nice to Mooman.
Mooman knows.
Mooman is an idiot who'll insult you in 1 instance but help in another, just like a 2 headed Brahmin.
But in all seriousness many of the regular posters are worth listening to. I was going to start listing names here but like the Academy awards don't want to miss out thanking someone.
You have received good advice already.
Cowboy build rifles and pistols. Sounds interesting. Yeehaw
Your build is everything.

You can post your build here and people can tell you what changes to make based on what you want to accomplish. rifles ans pistols for instance.
Another resource. Angry Turtle has a lot of vids.

Fookin cave crickets!
Since you are going for cowboy theme OP I would recommend going to Nuka World and taking a gander at the NPC vendors as I believe one of them sells cowboy attire.
The Most Wanted event has some possible rewards that will also fit nicely into your cowboy theme.
heres my best example your fighting a buncha of scorched and then you fall over and you see that cave cricket hop on by like where was he even at and hes like LOL GOT EM
Skippy knows, the kids told him.
