New player tips and build help
Decided to buy and start playing this game since it seems like it is finally in a decent enough place now. Any tips for a new player would be very much appreciated. Also I plan on going with a "cowboy" build. Don't know what it would be called in this game, but it would revolve around non-automatic rifles and revolvers. Any help and or guide for it would be great. Especially that which is focused on solo play.

you can pretty much do anybuild and be able to take out regular content enemies, poorly thought out builds or ones with sub ideal weapons can take a while and a bunch of ammo to kill the bigger regular enemies

that said

handguns are drastically underpowered, and the damage increasing perks are in bad specials (ones that have a ton of other better perks)

non-auto guns are also very very low DPS, slow rate of fire, long reload times and the like maybe 1/10 - 1/20th of the DPS output of the automatic versions... 1/5th the dps of heavy guns

teams have no downside to being in, you don't need to be near anyone or do things with them for some pretty huge potential benefits

While it doesn't sound like it should work like that if you want to get more ammo for a gun, use that gun. Some containers and enemies have contextual ammo - you are more likely to find ammo for the gun you have equipped. With a non-auto character ammo likely won't be much of a problem however.

Skills in this game are represented by perk cards. You can freely change out what perk cards you have active at any time (provided you have enough points the the appropriate SPECIAL stat to slot the card). So there is no need to keep a crafting perk active at all times. You can switch to it when you need to craft or repair, then switch back to something more useful for combat. The same applies to the lock picking and computer hacking cards.

From time to time, events pop up on the map. In the beginning one of these is especially good to do. If you see something about packs of wolves to the north west of Vault 76 (around a ferris wheel on the map), go and kill the pack leaders. It isn't hard, and each of the three pack leaders will drop a random legendary item. Also for getting gear, don't be afraid to go back and clear out areas you have already been to. Enemies, and the gear they drop, scale with your level.

The game is piss easy, you can close your eyes while you dump stats and your character will be able to solo nearly the entire PVE content

The game has a food and water system. Don't worry about starving or dying of dehydration. The bar being empty gives no penalties at all. Instead, eating and drinking give buffs. As for other buffs, make sure to sleep for about 30 seconds in a bed. It gives an XP boost for a period of time - the buff lasts longer from a bed than from a mattress, and allies you can find and place in your base apparently also increase the duration. Likewise, playing an instrument for about 30 seconds gives a buff that boosts action point regeneration.

Mooman is an idiot who'll insult you in 1 instance but help in another, just like a 2 headed Brahmin.

But in all seriousness many of the regular posters are worth listening to. I was going to start listing names here but like the Academy awards don't want to miss out thanking someone.

Yes there are a lot of very helpful knowledgeable people here that have helped me a lot.
You have received good advice already.
Cowboy build rifles and pistols. Sounds interesting. Yeehaw

Your build is everything.

You can post your build here and people can tell you what changes to make based on what you want to accomplish. rifles ans pistols for instance.

Another resource. Angry Turtle has a lot of vids.

Oh, and if you see a player on your teem with high rads, low health, its for a particular card build type of gameplay where they enjoy being killed by the sneaky radroach from behind with a one hit wonder.

bloodied players with leather armor for sneak bonus are the ones that go down constantly most bloodied players have more DR than power armor users, this still don't effect cave crickets but they are clearly the end game boss

Fookin cave crickets!

Since you are going for cowboy theme OP I would recommend going to Nuka World and taking a gander at the NPC vendors as I believe one of them sells cowboy attire.

The Most Wanted event has some possible rewards that will also fit nicely into your cowboy theme.
