Whats the deal with carry capacity / weight?
This is the first of the series that ive thought 'hang on why am i over the weight limit AGAIN'. Is there a perk/card/ability i'm being daft and missing out on? I feel like im only carrying about basic armour and a couple weapons and im always near my carry capacity (im level 20 near enough)

Weight limits of character and stash are mostly a thing only to get whales to pay monthly subscription to FO1st. You'll have to get used to it and learn not to hold on to things you don't have a use for... or subscribe for the unlimited junk and ammo storage bins.

Yes there is a perk card to increase your encumbrance. And other perk cards that reduce the weight of certain type of stuff.

Plus, there are Deep Pocket mods for regular armor.

Excavator Power Armor lets you carry 400 lb, if I remember right. I don't do PA.

I use Secret Service armor with 4 of 5 pieces having Deep Pockets for +10 carry weight each.

Secret Service Shielded under armor for +15 carry weight

I have 15 Strength. Each point of Strength adds 5 carry weight.

The Marsupial Mutation for +20 carry weight

And other things I can remember right now.

I Do Not have the Strength card Strong Back in play that adds +40 carry weight.

My max carry weight is 425 lb at the moment.

Point is, your max carry weight can and will be added to as you play and learn what the what things are for.

Edit; I forgot about my level 50 high capacity backpack. It adds a total of 120 lb carry weight.

Except for the game has been like this since launch,(there was no FO1st) hell some dude had to mail Todd Howard a box of bobby pins with a note that says "weigh this" before they lowered the weight of bobby pins.

You’re level 20. Things will get better as you gain levels because you pick up the perk cards that reduce weight on ammo, fusion cores etc.

For now you can do the scout quests and get the big backpack. at your level it would at 30 pounds carry capacity. At level 50, you can carry 60 extra pounds.

Additionally, look and see what extra stuff you are carrying. Lots of missiles, grenades, mininukes 40mm grenade rounds. They all weigh a LOT and people don’t think about them. Also look at the ammo you are carrying. Get high enough level and you can slot rank 3 bandolier in strength and reduce the weight of your ammo by 90%. To the point that many types of ammo become essentially weightless.

I would also look at your food and chems tab. Do you have a lot of water, stimpaks, nuka cola, etc? Those all add up

Thanks for the answers everyone, really helpful. Most so the ammo- was carrying a million 10mm ammo so that helped massively. Good to know about perks etc that will help in the end. Does not surprise me that the subscription makes it easier to manage

I have Fallout 1st and I still have issues with carry weight 209/355 in PA.

I dump gunpowder and or don't even bother picking it up. My max carry weight is 345 without chems or food so if it gets any higher than that I just start dropping ammo or selling bulk.
