Unless they have changed things, you can build turrets and crafting stations on the arms and stairways.

It also lets you do the Earth Mover quest (which makes it one of the most productive workshops in the game for ore I'm pretty sure).

I have built there tons of times. That is a great workshop to take when you need the materials. Totally not useless at all.
