If you want to speed run the game and do solo on everything in a month, no.
If the goal is to kill the end boss and get the rewards then that can be done in public with others, purely solo is doable but needs much more planning.
Any of the side quests such as expeditions and daily ops (small group repeatable quests) can be soloed. There is nothing locked out for solo players.
Someone has to use the Lone Wanderer perk, right?
Yes!,You can easily do the main quest and the side quests completely solo.
There are "events' Some you can do solo and there are other events,it's handy when others do pitch in to assist (There are players who absolutely do nothing at those events...just show up and stand there).
You can request help in the forums in here. Many people would volunteer instantly to help you (we all remember that quest as being frustrating). There are also some tactics for doing them solo (using other players as guinea pigs, but in this case you'd be reviving them when they were down, so they will be happy).
Bosses and team events are the only other things that pretty much require a team. And by "team" I mean whatever randos joined the event queue. You don't have to be in any formal group with these people, or even communicate with them at all. Drop in, drop out.
The rest of the time, you can play this game entirely solo, like you would play fallout 3 or 4. FO76 has it's own storyline, major quest chains, side quests, etc. Plenty of stuff to keep you business for a good while.
but are you good?
Though you may also need to adapt your tools to certain situations moreso than you would playing with a group. I did most of the story solo and there were a few cases where I had to rely on my stealth suit, or bring out my power armor and minigun to overcome a certain enemy.
Likewise if you're wanting to do side activities and get exclusive rewards then some encourage you to join a team, like Daily Ops. They are probably doable solo but you have to do them quickly to be in with the best chance of rare rewards, obviously 4 guns will get the job done quicker than 1.
I'd also recommend joining public events for the sake of getting XP. And joining a public team for those events will enhance your XP gain since you'll be getting XP for teammate kills as well as your own. Not to mention if it is a casual team you get an intelligence boost which buffs your XP gain further. Personally I tend to just host a casual team for people to join and leave as they see fit, while people are in it you'll get boosted XP regardless of what you're doing.
Joining public events is also a free fast travel to the event location, which can be good for early-game exploring.
Lastly in terms of interaction with other players I'd suggest at least setting up a camp with a vendor to sell items to other players. You set the price and get 90% of that whenever a player purchases an item. It's a lot more valuable than selling to NPCs and is largely automatic, you just list your items when you're there, then players can visit and buy them off your vendor whilst you are out exploring or doing story.
You can join public teams in the social menu so you can fast travel to your teammates' camps for free, which is crucial at early levels when you have few caps and want to discover tons of new locations and fast travel points for free. I understand the desire to solo but you also want to play smart and use multiplayer mechanics to your advantage whenever you can.
