If you do the heist with settlers you will miss one very good weapon though.
Each one of them ends in a quest that is "Side with Crater/Foundation". Until you side with, you can do the quests for the other faction.
Once you side with one or the other, there are 2 or 3 quests that are locked out. Because they involve doing the raid with the other faction.
However, once you do the vault raid, you have a choice to make on how to split the gold, that will impact your reputation with one or both of them.
Once that is all over with, you will still not be at Allied with the faction you did the raid with.
You can continue to get reputation for both sides until you are allied by doing the faction dailies and other events/actions.
Keep hunting down Ward's missing pieces
Keep finding tubes for Wren
Keep tracking down runaway raiders for Rocksy
Take pictures of Foundation for Davenport and give them to Crater for Raider reputation.
Take pictures of Crater for Davenport and give them to Ward for Settler reputation.
After you cook the soup for Esme, whichever faction you give it to will give you reputation.
Participate in Moonshine Jamboree and earn Raider Reputation
Participate in Eviction Notice and earn Settler Reputation
It will be a grind, and you can never go back in reputation. But at some point, you will be allied with both factions.
I always do the vault raid with the raiders as you get the most rewards this way. Do settlers up to the point of no return and get the Chinese stealth armour for free from the mission. Then do raiders for the vault raid and get the free named plasma rifle
They both have a high probability of glitching out, and from personal experience, it would be easier to do them by yourself than depend on the Artificial Unintelligence.
But yes, Raider gets you Slugbuster.
Note, if you are a completionist as far as achievements, you will need to do it with two characters to get the Achievement for each side.
