I just bought a lvl 20 Vampire expl. Gatling Gun, I will never use it but dream about what I could have done if I had it in 2018...
However, Gatling Gun has low DPS but shines in Ammo consumption, reliabilty, Accuracy is ok and allows long shots, in VATS it can fire 3-4 shots.
The 5mm Ammo is very lightweight, unlike .50, .308 etc.,huge benefit over other Guns.
(recommnded modifictions: speedy receiver, comfort Grip, standard Magzine, no "scope" but this is matter of taste and there is a skin available that comes with a different "scope")
When in Power Armor all Heavy Guns are best combined with the Perk "Stabilized"
* Gatling Gun is a ballistic Heavy Gun, name can be confused with:
-Gatling Laser
-Gatling Plasma
wich are also Heavy Guns but obviously different charcteristics
go to https://nukesdragons.com/fallout-76/character
you fill up what you have
and copypaste the url here
the more you share the better the help
Sure you can do that but then the next questions you have to answer are "How do I get ammo?" "Why do I die so easily?" etc.
Look around at the next event you attend and tell me how many people 'play their way' with the weapons and build they want. When was the last time you saw a shotgun or pipe rifle or even a hunting rifle?
There is a reason the OP created this thread and why you'll see many more past/present/future asking similar things. The game became unbalanced with the One Wasteland patch requiring consideration of build to keep it from being an un-fun mess.
OP still has to provide their deck set via nukesdragon
i'm one of those that happily gives new players a push in the right direction
most of the time i can easily answer "How do I get ammo?" "Why do I die so easily?"
if a new player wants to go commando i will show
if they want to go shotgunner i will show best to my knowledge build for that
pipe rifle btw isn't a joke
i just would advise against it
i consider it an exotic weapon, hard to master
usually i introduce players to simple builds like bloodied sneak commando, vamp shredder tank
i'll show the lead farm places, i'll show the bullet farming, etc
been doing that for 2 years at least
but see you mention "their way"
i can't force others to play like me, nobody can play like someone else
but when asked: "getting tired of dying, can you help?" i help
something like: try this simple build (shredder usually)
i show the nukesdragon deck and gift them brand new pajamas (shielded double stitched ofc)
you mention that wastelander patch, but that doesn't matter to new players
they wanna get stronger with the right weapons
the weapons they find cool
not the weapons the youtubers force you down your throat
the main component everyone seems to forget is this is a coop game
i am not interested in being the strongest (i have a bloodied commando and sure can kill with my choochoo quad ffr etc, but holy F is it boring)
i have teammembers who like the sneaky non vats sniping way
i won't discourage them
instead we try to find a way that works

TLDR; What would I like to get from this thread??? What weapon(s) do I need that kill efficiently and is thrifty in ammo and repairs? What armor do I need to survive. Stealth preferred but, if non stealth is way better then...
Note: I put that much in strength to be able to carry loot and still run out most of the time.
I just turned 50. Keep in mind this above was built around what was available to me through drops only, from lvl 1.
I have a .50 heavy gun that weighs 90% less and does extra damage to mutants. Used it in a public event but it burns through ammo too fast. Went with 900 rounds. Came home with about a 100 and was conservative in firing. Long event.
Oops, I have deconstructed the gatling guns I've got, will try the next one. UPDATE: I had one for sale in the vending machine. hahaha. I'll be trying it out today.
In playing public events 90% or more are PA and heavy weapon. They are also triple digit in level. Many several hundred. EDIT: Today in the tunnel of love event only about 10% were PA w/ heavy gun. All kinds running around even melee.
Yesterday I went to the event to eliminate the rogue bots then restart system. I'm stealth when crouching only. This person that was already there was full stealth and use some kind of energy weapon. They single shot everything. I don't think it was a heavy weapon.
I enjoy stealth sniper. I really enjoy hitting something then they try to figure out where it came from, hahaha. (Though I would rather hit something and it be dead.) But that all falls apart once inside or underground. If I can get the drop on them and take them one at a time its doable. But usually I'll get several at a time, especially in the last 5 or 10 levels. I have a .50 sniper rifle. 20 levels ago I could two shot (head) super mutants. Now it takes 5 or 6 shots. I would have thought a .50 head shot would do more damage. This has no legendary on it.
In the last couple of levels I got some kind of chainsaw and a shishkebab weapon. Will be trying those soon. My shotgun does a fair job up close. Not great. Did a lot better at level 25 than 45. I make a new weapon every time I can to keep damage up.
I love to craft and have a second build for crafting.
I can list the weapons and armor if needed. I have a power armor set that I haven't used yet. TBH I don't like that clomping sound when walking, plus its not stealth yet. I thought I would start using it when I get my first stealth piece. Stealth when crouching.
To start at the beginning: Fallout 76 has a lot of features, we haven't even talked about Underarmor, Mutations, food and Drug buffs.
Then comes the reward system and this season ends in 14 days, a high intelligence character with the right strategy can gain double or more xp and speed up progress on the score Board, but that is another story .
This is just to overwhelming in the beginning and to come back to the perks:
Many of us use perks like "contractor", "hard bargaining" and "Scrapper" but only when needed and change to other perks for venturing.
The "Refractor" perk shows another issue:
F0 76 has damage Reistence (like Armor and "Refractor" etc) and damage Reduction displayed in % (like "Mutant-Slayer" leg. effect on Armor, and PA has 7% damage Reduction per piece).
DR can be much more helpfull then DR, but actualy my point is to show that all of this is confuing in the beginning but makes sense the longer you play and then you get used to it, like driving a car with a stickshift :)
-You lose the "Lone Wander" Perk
+But you gain shared perks, potential benefit from "Empath" or "Herd Mentality" Mutations
+free fast travel to team mates, their camps and survival tent (FO 1st)
+maybe most important: shared loot and xp (if you don't tag the enemy 1/2 xp of what you would have gotten) in a 30m Radius.
the meat piles are highlighted, think of it like that: each Meat pile not only gives loot but xp and this can add up to high numbes:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2933184643
and most team members play on their own and come together for events :)
Melee build early on for a 1st time character. You'll have higher carry so you can loot more. You don't need much ammo of anything, strength and agility perks can boost your defense, and lots of strength perks pertaining to melee damage. Doesn't take much skill to use, just run in and bash. Vats makes hitting much easier, and you'll have max strength and agility anyway.
Down side, pretty useless after level 50 because of the way the game is designed. High end builds usually are all shooters, who can yawn and sit back during events and just blast stuff. Ammo is easy to get so usually power armor and heavy weapon blasting everything. Since events now scale up the high endplayers can just pick any event and do it, which isn't good when your new players hit the level 20-25 events and some level 400 players are just obliterating everything because the devs never had the brains to figure out how to balance the game correctly.
Again, since you can make up multiple characters you can play what you want. A early higher carry strength melee character, if you multiplayer /team a lot a nice charisma team boosting character, if you play a long time you'll want that OP gunner in power armor who can solo events to gain legendaries/items etc.
If you like the sniper play style I suggest to aim for a build like this (I always say like as there are always differences in what cards people value):
https://nukesdragons.com/fallout-76/character?v=1&s=2f163fe&d=p02pd1pk1pl1po2pp2l71lu2s01lk2lv2l12a72an2a04ar2ao0cu2c62s12eh0&m=52f
It's a Rifleman build with bonuses for sneak and crit damage. When you level up you don't need to only take random cards, you can pick which SPECIAL to take a card from via the scroll options at the bottom. Since you are level 50 that no longer applies though, but might help others.
For weapons and stealth you can't go past The Fixer as it has built in stealth bonuses, but a Combat Rifle can be nearly as good. Scrapping Combat Rifles will also unlock mods for The Fixer as they are the same base weapon, something not all weapons share (energy weapons mostly). You could also use Lever Action Rifles or the Gauss Rifle.
The mods you want are Aligned long barrel (-5%AP), Reflex sight DOT or Circle (-15%AP), Forceful (better as adds durability) or Aligned stock (-5%AP), Hardened receiver (damage), Quick magazine (-5%AP) and suppressor. Any other mods don't do anything worthwhile, AP reduction is key to flowing combat.
As base mutations I suggest Eagle Eyes (+50% crit), Speed Demon (Reload and movement speed) and adrenal reaction (lower health increases damage, even useful for full health). Get these from players for a cheap as you can. Other mutations are up to you.
Eventually you'll build up your legendary perks. I suggest to first focus on 2 legendary SPECIAL. Any 2 from Perception, luck or agility as those are the ones you'll naturally want higher than 5. Whichever you choose as you put the points in the SPECIAL take points out to distribute to other stats, taking note that 15 is the max you can use for cards. That way you'll still have say 15 total points in say perception but able to distribute 5 to another stat.
Stay in the shadows, aim for the head, and use crits when (VATS only) available.
EDIT: Forgot to add, don't scrap utility cards such as lockpick. You can swap them in as needed anytime.
I'll look into the group thing.
Yes it is confusing. But thats ok, just takes time and luckily its easy to change cards.
I have been using melee all along. But more so in the beginning.
I have a third loadout which I'll be trying that rifle build.
Here are some weapons I got the last couple days:
Berserkers Short Gatling Gun 2 star
Executioners heated shishkebab 3 star
Burning Love Bow 3 star
Love tap gun 3 star
Furious tactical minigun 3 star
The Fixer built from purchased plan
Similar to "furious" wich is best on guns with high fire rate, when 2. and 3rd effects are good (+firerate, explosive, less AP cost...) these can serve for some time until you get someting better.
However, I went through my stock and got a genious idea- if you play along:
I give you 2 X Handmade Rifle, Silencer etc., 1 star blodied, 1 in full-auto, the other semi-Auto.
Then you can compare rifleman vs commando and report back (if you like)
If you want pm me your ingame name and time frame for a brief meeting, I'll just drop you the guns and thats it.
I see Starched Genes used a lot in builds.
Is there a core set of cards one should always use?
Is the power armor / heavy gun considered the "best" (whatever best means) build by most?
Any suggestions on that build?
Is it the most versatile?
