Perks for auto-axe?
Do the melee perks like swing speed and damage actually improve the auto-axe? I have a special build just for vendors and workshop building and sometimes I forget to swap it out for my melee damage build. I definitely notice when my super sledge is doing half damage, but the auto-axe just shreds through things at seemingly the same rate regardless of my perks. Unless it's an event boss, everything dies within about 5 seconds of me axe-ing them a few questions. However, I do notice that it breaks super fast if I don't have the improved durability perk on.

Don't have a auto-axe but have been using a dual bar flaming chainsaw. I literally did the same thing last night where I was on my crafting/build kit defending a workshop and noticed stuff didn't die as quick so it does make a difference just not as much against trash mobs.

The way the auto-axe and chainsaw work it is closer to a flamer than a melee weapon and the reason you noticed such a big difference vs the sledge is because auto-axe is spinning constantly doing damage (if you are hitting enemy with it of course) while you only do damage with the sledge when it connects with a baddy.

I'd be curious how the Whacker Smacker would be in comparison with a crafting/building kit since it has a hidden perk that gives it a faster swing speed vs the sledge.

Rotary weapons are bugged to spin at maximum speed in first person. It may be patched out one day...

That bug exists in fallout 3 and new vegas as well if I recall, so it might be something to do with the engine?

Slugger card in Strength gave me some increase in damage stats but it seemed
less than the %indicated on the card. i.e. 2 ranks on the card gave +15% but the damage
increase only went from 56 to 60.

The perk cards will multiply/add from the base damage. A level 50 AA has a base of 26, 15% is 3.9 so 4.0 rounded.

Strength special stat will also multiply/add 5% per point from the base damage as well as any other buffs.
I was curious about swing speed bonus with the auto axe so I recorded two videos of me fighting the EN06 to compare. The swing speed only changes the speed you start the attack, as in the initial swing of the axe before it starts spinning. In the end, the health bars of EN06 were identical. The test was purposefully done on HP bar, not speed to kill, so it wasn't dead either time and I did a full reset of the whole game to prevent glitches like doing damage while the shield was up. Swing speed would be great for a sledge or something but is useless for chainsaw or auto axe
As said above, swing speed, either via perk or legendary trait, or any other source, has no effect OTHER than the 'time between when u hold down button and when it starts hitting(IE 0.2 seconds difference maybe) - the auto weapons all attack at maximum possible speed the client can handle, swing speed has no effect on the weapon once it starts hitting/doing damage.

For most auto weapons(Autoaxe, chainsaw) they are 2hand weapons so slugger affects them, the one handed chainsaw (Ripper) is affected by 1 hand perks(but even then it sucks, is good as a sneak weapon but only gets sneak the first few seconds of attack, so is a pointless weapon no matter how godly it's stats are)
Non bloodied builds, the legendary mods you want are ari/bloodied/anti armor then heavy hitter for the second star, +3 strength for third, and finally pounders for the fourth star.

For max damage, you want an electric auto axe with all 2 hand melee perks, incisor, and all three science perks since the electric axe scales off of energy damage as well.
