The way the auto-axe and chainsaw work it is closer to a flamer than a melee weapon and the reason you noticed such a big difference vs the sledge is because auto-axe is spinning constantly doing damage (if you are hitting enemy with it of course) while you only do damage with the sledge when it connects with a baddy.
I'd be curious how the Whacker Smacker would be in comparison with a crafting/building kit since it has a hidden perk that gives it a faster swing speed vs the sledge.
That bug exists in fallout 3 and new vegas as well if I recall, so it might be something to do with the engine?
less than the %indicated on the card. i.e. 2 ranks on the card gave +15% but the damage
increase only went from 56 to 60.
The perk cards will multiply/add from the base damage. A level 50 AA has a base of 26, 15% is 3.9 so 4.0 rounded.
Strength special stat will also multiply/add 5% per point from the base damage as well as any other buffs.
For most auto weapons(Autoaxe, chainsaw) they are 2hand weapons so slugger affects them, the one handed chainsaw (Ripper) is affected by 1 hand perks(but even then it sucks, is good as a sneak weapon but only gets sneak the first few seconds of attack, so is a pointless weapon no matter how godly it's stats are)
For max damage, you want an electric auto axe with all 2 hand melee perks, incisor, and all three science perks since the electric axe scales off of energy damage as well.
