As you level you should be able to craft a Level 50 backpack with the carry weight of 60

You will get a bigger one and learn mods for them as you progress through the story and quests. Look at a train station for an Order of the Tadpoles poster to start the quest. Well, it was like that way back when it was first introduced, not 100% sure though.

When you see Campfire Tales public event, do it for a chance to earn possum badges to get the larger backpack/mods.

You can unlock mods to have extras, but you will discover them as you play, so no spoilers, just explore map and play the game.

There are two backpacks available.

You get a small backpack that can be crafted at (your level + 10) / 2 carry capacity going up at 10 level increments to a max level 50. So the most it can hold is 30.

The Order of Tadpole quest line will reward you with a regular backpack which can be crafted at your level + 10 to a max of level 50. So the most it can hold is 60. Then there are mods that can be acquired that will make changes to the base backpack.

Backpacks and the plans to craft them cannot be traded.

You can get the Backpack Large Capacity Mod Plan. That allows you to carry 120 extra pounds.

Not sure but, it may be available to buy for bullion. That requires you to do the Wastelanders quest line that starts by talking to the two women just outside Vault 76.

The original way to get the mod is to do the Ever Upwards quest line. That one you start by clicking on the Scouts poster in (EDIT) ALMOST any train station. Then you earn Scout Badges and buy the mod with those at the Scout Camp's billboard sign there.

Rarely you may be able to trade for the mod. That way ain't easy.

Edit; ONLY the backpack mod plans can be traded.

Edit 2; I forgot they give you a small backpack now days. You used to have to earn a pack.

There are two different backpacks. The small one you get Morgan airport that increases weight as you level up (I believe you must re-craft every 10 levels or so to get the extra weight) and then there is the standard backpack you get from activating a quest at any train station.

You go to the board and there will be multiple side quests you can get from there but the one you need for the backpack is "Order of the Tadpole" or something like that. I believe it doubles the capacity stock and you can get mods for the backpack with badges you earn from doing various things.

Once you do get to the point of getting a mod I would suggest the Grocers over the High Capacity.

I actually went for the chems - I carry more stimpaks and other chems (berry mentats, psychobuff etc) than food... plus, chems don't expire.

Yeah I went with Traveling Pharmacy to help with that. In any case I think it's always more beneficial to get the mod that lowers the weight of items instead of increasing capacity.

Yes,there is a larger one and it's called,standard Backpack.
A few months ago, they added to where now when leaving the vault, you get one automatically(a small backpack). In order to make more, you still need the plans. To get the standard backpack, you need to do the tadpole...Ever Upwards!. Tho' keep in mind, you get more carry weight as you level up with both small and standard sizes....but, you will still need the plans in order to do so. Here's a link that might help.

For your second part of your post....I usually play solo and I'm not always available on a time table/schedule. Tho' when I play certain events like daily ops and start a group...you are welcome to join in.

I went for the agility card thru-hiker because I went for the chem backpack, I went for the chem backpack because I wanted the extra strength point for something else.
