Yao Guai... OWW!
So I am new to fallout 76. got from level 10 to 58 this month.

I do fine against scorched, raiders, most animals...

gulpers are a bit tough. often have to spam stimpacks.

but holy crap.. the yao guai stun lock me or something.

I am playing a high str, high perception mid endurance build.

I have been using sniper rifle to thin the ranks of mobs/take health off a boss and then using power fist at 146 damage....

I was hoping for weapon, tactics and build suggestions for creatures like yao guai and mirelurk kings..

thanks to any who reply.

If you're not using VATS Crits, then you're missing out. Combat Rifle, Handmade, or Fixer are the three rifles to pick between imo... and in VATS a Critical hit will do massive damage. My Fixer can solo take out the Earle (event boss in under 2 minutes and SBQ (another event boss) in under a minute. But if you're just shooting normally, the damage is absolute crap.

Also, when you say "high str, high perception" what numbers are we talking? I run a Bloodied build with Unyielding armor so all of my stats except Endurance are in the mid 40s. I think without that kind of build most stats will usually be in the teens?

He's using a sniper rifle first, then a power fist, meaning his stats and build are stinky and he is trying to fight a mutated irradiated bear barehanded. I don't see any problems...

The balance in the game is WAY OFF. "Sniper Rifle" might as well be a Nerf gun. Grab a Gatling Gun for range. Most "Heavy Weapons" should get you through Bears and Kings for now.

But really, 50+ is when your build starts coming together. I'd suggest looking up various builds to see if anything interests you.

The game has odd and sometimes irrational mechanics, so you can't always assume things will work in an obvious way.

"gwáilóu" was used to say 'ghostly man' (white people) during WWII, but it can also mean 'devil person'... it's a fitting name, then

They get easier to kill once you start calling them yogi bears.

It's a play on Yogi, as in Yogi the Bear

If you can sneak up on one, try sniping it while hidden.
They are called murder bears for a reason.:VBCOOL:

although your idea is funny, in Fallout 4 there is a VDSG panel that explains how it is named after the term from the war for white prisoners (gwai lou, used IRL)
"Originally named by the descendants of those held in Chinese internment camps before the Great War, the Yao Guai is a ferocious mutated bear."

Wait until Meat Week comes, up by Top of The World you can get up to 3 Glowing 3stars to crawl all over you at one time , and they are fast. I carry lots of stimpacks for the Bloodied builds..

To the OP, this takes quite a bit a work because you basically need improvement across the board: better offense (more damage), defense (take less damage), better weapon, better armor, better everything.

This is my 3-star The Fixer (pic: https://i.imgur.com/pKIPyW9.jpg ) that can stealth-kill a level 75 yao guai like it's nothing (video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6SUQ4iMuG8 ). I have to spec all to commando and nothing for melee. My perk config is low STR and high PER, AGI, and LCK: https://i.imgur.com/fxqLFMK.jpg . But my key defensive perk is in STR, which is Blocker rank 3 that reduces 45% enemy melee damage, great for dealing with yao guai's attack or any melee attack.

I have a full set of Unyielding armor that adds +15 to SPCIAL (no increase to endurance) when my health is <= 20% (about 50 hit points). That still gives me a respectable 26 STR (pic: https://i.imgur.com/6AXJeAN.jpg ), allowing me to have high carry weight and deal nice melee damage should I need to. My perception is over 40 and I can sneak from far away and still get good VATS chance.

I eat gourd soup to boost my perception, and use Herbivore mutation to double the effect of gourd soup to +4 perception. I use the radiation glove box to add another +2 perception. So I get another +6 PER here.

I have Marsupial mutation that lets me jump high, great for avoiding a yao guai's attack.

I have Adrenal Reaction mutation that adds +50% base damage to all my weapons when I'm at <= 20% health. Nerd Rage gives me another +20% base damage to all my weapons at low health.

If you use power armor, a low-health build also lets you use emergency protocol on the torso, which reduces all incoming damage by 50% when your health is <= %20. Always use the power armor HUD, because it shows the health meter in percentages, making it easy for you to maintain 20% health.

If your health is slightly off 20%, brahmin milk reduces your rads a little bit (thus raising your health), while *spoiled* brahmin milk increases rads a little bit (decreasing your health). Even a little thing like this can't be overlooked in making a good build.

My gun above has triple the base damage:

Level 50 The Fixer base damage: 48
Powerful automatic receiver: +6
Aristocratic legendary effect: +50% of base damage while having 29k+ caps = +24 damage
All commando perks at rank 3: +60% of base damage = +28.8
Bloody Mess perk rank 3: +15% of base damage = +7.2
Adrenal Reaction mutation at <=20% health: +50% of base damage = +24
Nerd Rage at <=20% health: +20% of base damage = +9.6

Total: 48+6+24+28.8+7.2+24+9.6 = 147.6 DAMAGE . And that is without sneak. The damage is essentially tripled by going from 48 base to 148.

STR and PER on high together just doesn't make much sense
both those on high will result in a penalty on the other specials
(even if you don't use Vats)

is a great tool to share your setup
people will critique it for sure, but you'd be amazed how the bear monster will turn in to a teddy bear in a second when you try their advice
