Scrap box is your crafting bag. You need to build the scrap box in your Camp.
While having some scrap is useful, there is nothing like crafting writs in this game.
Scrap is broken down junk. You want to put your junk in the scrap box because it holds unlimited amounts of junk.
Now comes the "cool" part. You played FO4 and are well aware that if you were at a crafting bench that at a settlement, you could craft/repair using anything that was stored in that settlement bench, unless you had supply routes connecting your settlements.
In FO76, every crafting bench, anywhere on the map is connected to your scrap box, stash box, inventory. So you don't have to carry enough stuff on you to fix things if you are away from home. You can just go go to a bench and do your thing.
Something else nice for your stash is there are stash boxes everywhere. Every train station, every Red Rocket, and the major settlements have stash boxes, as well as every players camp or survival tent. The stash boxes are instanced to each player. I go to a stash box at a train station, and I see my stuff. You go to the same box, look in it, and see your stuff.
Lastly, when you die, you only drop the stuff in your junk tab of your inventory. That's it. nothing else. So you want to stash/store everything frequently so when you die. You aren't in danger of losing much.
As in the components and such? Yes! It doesn't matter if you have 50 wood on your person or in your STASH, or stuffed away in your SCRAPBOX; you'll be able to craft wherever you want. Your CAMP, someone else's CAMP, that irradiated and dirty chem station submerged in water over there: anything goes.
