Joinable factions?
I orginally got this game day one for the Xbox one and I haven't played since before they added NPC characters.

My question is if you can join any of the factions? (Responders, Raiders, Brotherhood, Enclave) and does doing so effect the story line like in the previous Fallout installments?

Storylines and NPCs alive/dead status do change depending on your choices.

However only you'll see the results in instanced locations that don't have much reason to revisit after the quests are done (Maybe Crater core for Mortimer and photos of Meg or Foundation for Paige). Also forgot Atlas for tech docs.

but other than a single quest line which splits at a set point. There is no impact on the game beyond that quest line.

I saw that the Brotherhood of steel was introduced as a faction recently, but you can't join them?

You can't join any faction, the most you can do is become allies with some of them

The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

FIFY

You can also join the brotherhood, and you can join the enclave

Technically the only one you HAVE to join to do the main story is the enclave

BoS is a side story
Settlers / Raiders are main story but you don't need to actually get to the point where you are allied with either/both

Then why are you here spouting misinformation?

You don't really join any, you're basically friends with every faction that isn't a natural enemy faction and your choices don't really matter in the long run.

You don't really "join" the Raiders and Settlers but they are factions that have an actual reputation mechanic to them. You do join the BoS and Enclave complete with ranks and special equipment and stuff. Factions like the Responders that don't technically exist anymore I suppose you can say you "join" but only in the sense that you are repping their ideals.
