You will earn atoms progressing through the scoreboard(s) and by completing the various challenges, i.e. kill x amount of robots with a musical instruments.
Personally I would not focus on getting atoms through those challenges but rather let them trickle in by just playing the game or else they might become a chore. Later on it gives you something to focus on as some of them are quite silly, in my opinion.
Now, I'm not justifying the high prices on things, especially for PA skins, but just giving some insight as to why this is (partially) the case.
There are also many skins you can find for free in-game that you get as rewards for different quests and events, so you can still get those to customize things.
I just started playing again about a month and a half ago, after not touching it since launch. Personally, I just watch for the bundles and discounts they do every week in the store to get things cheaper. There's also a decent amount of Atoms that you can get from the scoreboard, which you mention, that you can snag stuff with. You get a bonus of 500 for completing rank 100, pkuse the several 150s on the board. And, if I'm not mistaken, get more for ranking the board past 100
I would rather spend money on story stuff because that seems justifiable for those prices. But to swap a color skin for the same price is ridiculous.
Reminds me of Angry Joe ranting about the color blue. 20 bucks for the color blue.
Probably to draw more people to the game.
Okay one of the PA is on sale, it's regular price is 1500 atoms. But they reduce it to 1050. That is 10 dollars and 50 cents. They probably want you to purchase the 24.99 atom pack. It couldn't just be 1000.
Just because they offer the story content for free that they need to charge high and ridiculous prices for everything else.
They want to look like saints but in reality they look like crooks. I mean they are no better than the raiders in the game that you come across.
Oh the story is free. You might as well be paying for the story content for all the high prices on power armor skins they are charging..
You both seem to have missed this part of my original post:
OP, it's clear now that you just want to have something to be upset about.
I haven't been around this long enough to know what updates have been made. So far with my time with it. It plays like a Fallout game.
I have run into a few bugs. Like dogs that slide all over the place when they are chasing you.
I am not saying the game is horrible. I am enjoying it but I just feel some of the online business model of charging prices is only done by their corporate shareholders instead of reasonable people.
Because charging 10 dollars for a color swap on armor in the game is just bad business practice.
Buying atoms was much much cheaper on the Bethesda launcher after all all the money went to them so for their cut they didn't demand us to spend as much but that shut down sadly. So yeah now we have higher atom prices.
I'm still living off the Bethesda launcher atoms knowing that the steam prices were way higher so bought a ton of atoms before the Bethesda launcher shut down. got 4773 left the scoreboard is kinda keeping me afloat as well. but yeah i don't like the steam atom price tag myself so i will never buy into that price these 4773 atoms i got left will likely be mostly my last with only the scoreboard refilling my atoms.
