The gauss mini does not suffer this issue at the ranges I use it.
And as @Deklend notes any of the heavy guns really need the associated heavy weapons perks to shine; things like Stabilized and Heavy Gunner.
Also, one thing I do if I find I need a bump in my ammo supply - use the selected weapon in a Daily Operation (just having it equipped when the last boss is killed gives a nice ammo count). Good way to gather some gauss mini ammo.
The regular ammo weighs a lot and if you decide to use ultracite it weighs double the regular ammo.
Ammo also expensive to craft as the amounts you get per craft are very low. Ammo amount per craft seems to be suited for the gauss rifle and not the minigun. Unlike 5mm ammo where you get heaps per craft and suits a weapon like 5mm minigun. Much better to go do daily ops for ammo than crafting it yourself.
On any PA build I am usually always maxing Strength and Intelligence so no issues with having enough points to put heavy gunner damage perks and stabilised and the weight perk for ammo.
Does it do anything my 5mm miniguns or gatling lasers cannot do? Not really, but seeing as it is a bullion weapon it is kinda held in high esteem I guess. Honestly before the energy damage fix not long ago I never used mine. I pulled them out again as it is quite decent now since the fix. Before I always felt it was a bit underwhelming compared to other heavy guns.
I think that is the worst thing about any of the Gauss weapons. the ammo weight. Even with batteries included it ways like 10x conventional ammo. I have a good Guass Shotgun I use. But I can't imagine using the ammo on a minigun. I wouldn't be able to carry anything else.
Expect to spend thousands of scrip just trying to get a series of rolls that are actually useful.
Miniguns have the Foundations Vengeance from Eviction Notice, easy to get with usable rolls that can tide over till the RNG slot machine awards something better.
I dont know why every ammo is such a pain to craft when compared with plasma cores/ultracite plasma cores
Because most ammo is balanced around vanilla weapons and most ammo types only coincided with rifleman weapons back then. Makes most heavy weapons in the same calibers resource hogs.
10k of regular 2mm EC is 25 pounds. 10k ultracite 2mm EC is 50 pounds. 10k of 5mm ultracite is like 1 pound for comparison. All with the respective ammo weight perks.
Sorry but the Gauss minigun is not 25 or 50 times better than regular minigun, to justify that ammo weight.
Feels a bit odd that a weapon that is locked behind bullion is so prohibitively held back by its ammo weight so badly. Also its poor ammo amount per craft. 15 ammo for a base amount per craft is a complete joke for a fast firing weapon like this. It is a very ammo hungry weapon and needs you to carry a decent amount of ammo to be effective for any period of time. I am rarely ever setting out with less than 7k ammo on me and that does not last very long.
I can fit the ammo weight on my PA build but it limits me to only around 80-100 free pounds to pick up stuff and loot/receive legendaries etc. When I am using Gauss minigun I am needing to return to a scrip machine or scrapbox far more often due to the ammo weight. Good thing I can deplete the ammo very fast I guess, lol.
From memory the base amounts before perks are applied is something like this:
- Regular Gauss ammo is 15 per craft. Regular 5mm is 100 per craft.
- Ultracite Gauss is 60 per craft. Ultracite 5mm is 200 per craft.
Big difference for crafting ammo with two similar guns as far as ammo consumption goes.
I make a lot of my own ammo. I do have all the perks though including legendary ammo factory at max. Other ammo types are all ok, just gauss really hurts with the low amounts.
