Imagine an update with a simple shooting gallery where rodents of all kind quickly run in waves, and you have to shoot them without need to move.
You get 10 caps for each rodent. And some little ammo. Awesome.
Check out this reddit post for datamined stuff. Molerat power generators!

its an update.
updates are new content or fixes thats free and mandatory to play.
expansions are usualy paid for, but arnt needed to play the main game.
DLC is content you MUST pay for, and add deeper content into the story or whole new areas.
addons are free and not necessary to play, but can add more content such as maps or items
these days people dont know the difference of anything, and its getting problematic and confusing, causing more problems the more it happens. these days many devs dont know the difference between an update and DLC, so they call updates "free" like its a choice to have lmao
Betathesda devs (including Todd) have already said ALL Fallout 76 DLC will be completely free. Their exact words. Apparently, this is why the microtransactions are so ridiculous.
Of course, no one should be surprised that it turned out to be lies.
As for the terminology, you want to be careful. Betathesda likes to play fast and loose with the definitions.
It's about margin, about player engagement and player-retention metrics, and data collection. Daily content= player retention, you'll keep people coming everyday for their daily grind, instead of them burning through storyline and putting the game back on the shelf until next update. Same goes with extreme randomization of loot through the 3-star legendary system, and daily supply of scrip. Want that full unyielding armor? That bloodied explosive wep? Well you can't just burn through it, farm legendaries in events to scrap them and get it in a few days, you have to log on everyday, 'cause everyday is another day where you'll struggle with inventory trying to store legendaries and push you closer to buy fallout 1st to store infinite scrap, everyday will be another day you're exposed to the cash-shop using daily "free rewards" to lure you to see what's on it today, and maybe you'll see something you like there and spend some money to get that nice looking power armor skin. And of course, if you're already a premium customer, every more day you take to achieve your goal is another day of fallout 1st you're paying.
The people making these developement choices are neither dumb, crazy, nor talentless. They know exactly what they are doing and are some of the top minds in their fields. It's simply a matter of their goals not being aligned with a player's goals.
