Great post. Really depends on what ammo your build needs I guess. I don't have one, but will probably build one at some point.
First, in general, the game mechanics skew ammo in such a way that most people end up using a few calibers and that leads to most people ending up with lots of the uncommon/useless calibers. Even at a 5:1 loss, it's worth it if you trade enough in - all that 10mm and .38 ammo people have thousands of for sale could instead be turned into .45 Fixer Feed with a bit of effort.
And, yes, the interface is clunky, but all it takes is a bit of discipline and a cheat sheet. I spent a few minutes going into the interface to check the trade-in increments of each ammo type, and then I just trade in when I hit nice, even multiples of those increments - e.g. Arrows and Crossbow bolts can be traded in groups of 10, 100, or 1000 - so, just save up until you get 100 and then it's a single-click redemption.
It's not a cure-all for ammo woes, of course, but used correctly it's a great supplement to the rare player vendor who happens to sell exactly what you need or the daily ops ammo farming runs. Hell, I haven't had to make a Lucky Hole mining run in months, and it's in no small part thanks to this converter.
