After over a week of it crashing I was getting ready to uninstall and reinstall it but decided to try starting it again and it started up no problem. WTF. Nothing has been updated since the original post.

It is not just you, OP. This is the reason I uninstalled this game and moved on. I too have a high end machine (i7, 16GB RAM, 8GB 2070 GPU) and it crashed constantly, on either an SSD or HDD.

The problem is Bethesda. This engine is woefully outdated. Much of the tech running this game, didn't exist when the original Gamebryo engine was created (And yes, Gamebryo remains the core of this engine, despite Howard's lies).

Add to that, Bethesda have never "cleaned up" their code. Fallout 4 still contained code from older games that did not need to be there. So does this game. Bethesda keeps piling new code on top of old, unstable code. And its finally falling apart on them.

My advice: Move on. Eventually, Microsoft will clean house and most of the execs at Bethesda will (rightfully) be shown the door. Until that day comes, Bethesda will remain unable to build a stable gaming experience and unwilling to use modern game engines.

Same engine as fallout 4, same problems. Works fine for me, just needed to install legacy directx. Using i7, 32gb, rtx 3090, 4k 144hz monitor, running the game on a m.2 ssd. Waiting for new Ryzen CPU and motherboard but its a long queue to get it. So I may encounter other problems with the game when i run with a new system. Most problems with the game is with ryzen CPU it seems. My friend can run it with ryzen without any problems, but he got high pc knowledge aswell.

However fallout 4 update the directx on steam while fallout 76 wont update it. Thats the reason why so many with fresh installed windows can't play the game without updating directx.

Edit fallout76prefs.ini is needed aswell for newer systems, located in documents/my games/fallout76. You need to set iPresentInterval to 0. Its the ingame vertical sync, might mess with high frame rate systems or monitors. Also disable vertical sync in radeon or nvidia control panel if its on there.

For other reasons it may crash on start up, some programs running in the background may cause it to crash. So turn off all unnecersary programs and see if something causing it. If it is then just close them down one by one and check what program is causing the game to crash.

Most common is Riva Tuner, or Msi afterburner. Sometimes but very rare its opera web browser.

For older pcs this performance guide is for you.

Hello traveler searching for "fallout 76 crash please stand by". You tried everything, killed all the processes, but you missed one - the actual task manager. Process Explorer from Sysinternals also causes this crash.
