What is up with stairs?
I mean seriously.. I can't place stairs where i want unless its on a floor.. in my camp they wont snap to certain things and if i do get them to work they lock solid and cannot be removed ever..

I literally had two floating stairs hovering alone that could not be deleted.. and had to remove my camp because of them..

I hate this build mode it was far better years ago.

Can you actually connect roof tiles to floor ones?

The issue was i lagged and placed two stairs instead of one.. then sadly it was out of bounds at the top so i couldn't place anything.

Same it was far far superior..

I think its because early on people were exploiting with them.

Stairs can only be built on a floorpiece. Either a bottom or upper floor piece. CAMP building is really a watered down version of Fallout 4 workshop building. It's just very limited.

No you can't.

This image shows the maximum height of a camp that I built for Halloween. I had to fiddle around to make it have 4 floors. https://imgur.com/a/pL6WulM

The last floor is half a floor. You can stand in it, but it has a low ceiling.

I also got caught out many times.

One I clearly remember was me removing stairs to put a new better looking set in. No go. Build system would not let me put another staircase back exactly where the previous one was. Also could not put old set back. Had to remove and rearrange half my flipping camp before it allowed me to put the stairs back. :steamfacepalm:

My new rule with stairs when building is set them and forget them. Put them in and never try to move or change them. The hassle isn't worth it.

You almost have to build from the top down. Plan out the upper floors/rooves first before doing too much downstairs.

That way if the upper floors don't work there is less to backtrack and cause issues with the various stair options.

Once placed if a nicer option is in atomic store/scoreboard you can usually just replace in build menu (T off memory) instead of having to delete and rebuild.

In some ways the same sized walls with wallpaper is better than FO4, but not being able to have half floors to foundations for hallways/corridors really sucks. Not to mention how lifeless camps are to settlements.

Oh it gets worse. One time I was building a camp and it ended up not being correctly positioned so I was removing everyhing. For some reason I could not remove an upper floor piece and therefore couldn't remove the stairs or the bottom floor piece either. I ended up having to move the camp.

There's another quirk to the build system and stairs caused by foundation blocks. Foundations are only considered anchored to the ground mesh in the top half of the block (half wall height). It is possible to have them sit higher out of the ground/above water if snapped to a correctly anchored block via walls or stairs.

What this can do is cause stairs to be the connection back to an anchor. For example: You place a foundation, stairs up to another floor then another set down somewhere. Snap a foundation to down stairs. This new foundation is sitting high off the ground (above that half wall height) and is now only anchored via the stairs.

This locks the stairs as they are the only thing holding up the foundation. You would first have to delete the foundation before the stairs and depending on what you've done elsewhere in the camp it could have created a complex connection back to an anchored foundation.

If in doubt always look for high sitting foundations as a potential cause for scap/store issues.

I think that is exactly what happened..

Unfortunately replacing stairs with a different set with T is only a fairly recent addition. The issues I had were from well before we had this option. Also in any of my camps, even recently built ones, when i try to use T to replace stairs i get a vague error message.

"An unspecified error has occurred" Yeah no ♥♥♥♥ game. :steamfacepalm:

Used to love building but so many changes and limitations not to mention these bugs really sap the fun out of it for me now. I just build functional these days. Elaborate and cool doesn't happen anymore much.

Can't place. Needs Support...
It's a picture! The wall IS its support!
Can't move, other object would be inaccessible...
Everything else is accessible!

F it! Where the Red Rocket thing?

I guess I'm not the only one who shouts a lot while building...
PocketYoda Nov 10, 2021 @ 11:03pm
