As soon as, you log off you lose the workshop
You lose the free fast travel point
However, if you manually return to it you can defend it and reclaim it without additional cost
IF you log off for a prolonged period and somehow return to the same server the workshop is gone (IIRC 5 minutes?)
You can use this knowledge to transfer items between your characters as well :')
Drop stuff at Vault 76, change char and pick it up.
You keep ownership of all workshops with all their buildings because it is the same server...aka it is the same world you just left
Still, you generally lose the fast travel point to the workshop
No problem...just wait for an attack...you get the fast travel point back if attacked
Of course, dont defend (loss of time...) and just retake it when you feel like it
Now, it only works for some minutes...
As already said, the ability to keep same server for a while after deco is really great to mule items between characters in all safety
In Public, you are very very unlikely to relog into the same server you just left...so, it doesnt work (at least solo without friends...)
I mean you have to invest quite some resources to build generators, extractors, defense that will be gone when you quit. I tried to dismantle that stuff and store it before I quit and it was gone anyway and not even "stored".
So unless your extractors are running for a long time the invest might be higher than the gained resources...
You only start to use your own mats when you have used all the mats from the workshop
If the cost in mats is green, it is from workshop (free...)...if white, it is your own mats
You can build quite some collectors + generators + some turrets for free
You can even use (switch for...) the perk card halving costs to be able to build even more for free
So, it costs you nothing at all (but time...) to build in a workshop
Building on Public could be a waste (of time....) because possible PVP
But on Private...
When I run low on scrap, I log into a private world, and take over a bunch of workshops.
You don't have to sit in front of the computer all day, just wedge a key or put a rubber band on your controller. Don't do this on a public server, though.
Thanks for the information, didn't know that.
Cheers,
