No sound after the inro, I'm on the brink of depression here
So I recently factory reset my computer and decided to revisit Fallout 76. I have a roommate that has the game and I figured that I'd give the game a fair shot. After installing it through steam (I have the Wastelander edition btw, it's no longer listed on the store page) the game refused to launch through steam. Then when I launched the exe file directly it displayed an error saying that it was missing an audio_7 and xinput_1 dll file. I tried clean booting the PC to uncover the problem, but after some testing with other games, I came to the conclusion that this error was exclusive to FO76.

I then manually added the dll files from this folder https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1foFmKaHal0Hy-5Ka6xET1r4uUf5gl_wr?usp=sharing into the file directory of Fallout76.exe file. That solved the issue and I was then able to launch the game properly and even play it without a hitch. I made a new character logged off and waited for my roommate to come back from work so we could play. On the second time launching I noticed that the sound was gone. No menu sound and no in game sound. After restarting multiple times, nothing changed. The sound was there for the intro cinematic and the Bethesda bootup sequence, but as soon as the menu pops up all the sound is gone. I googled to see if anyone else had the same issue and even though I found a couple of people going through the same thing, none of the links I found had any good help. Even the Bethesda forum with an official employee from Bethesda just commented saying that it might be the headphone settings so check if it outputs correctly.

What I've done: I have reinstalled the game (several times) and verified the files through steam. I have tried to launch the game with and without headphones plugged in. I have checked if the sound outputs directly in the windows settings - sound - app volume and device preferences. I have gone in the in game settings and changed Voice chat from auto to team and then to none to no prevail. I've ran the game as administrator and I've ran the game while being in a clean boot state. And before I get the grandmother reply of "Have you checked that sound works at all" question, the answer is yes! It works on chrome, it works on steam, it works with system notifications and it works with other games. I'm downloading Fallout 4 as I'm typing this to see if it has the same issue since both FO4 and FO76 use the same engine and code base. Please help me as I'm growing desperate. the last thing I did now was completely resetting my computer (yes a clean reset deleting all local files and reinstalling windows). Even with Steam and Fallout 76 being the only two things that I downloaded on this clean reset PC, the game gives me the same dll error as earlier and placing the dll files back in still gives me no sound past the intro. As a Fallout fan I just want to experience the last game in the collection that I haven't properly played yet.

PC Specs:
Windows 10 Home 20H2
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4460 CPU @ 3.20GHz 3.20 GHz
8.00 GB RAM
NVIDIA GTX 960
I know these specs are barely minimum requirement for FO76, but I swear to you that I was able to run the game just fine some months back. It was only when I reinstalled FO76 after the first PC reset that I got these issues.

Look for directx from june 2010. Or install and start another game from steam that uses directx11. Or install directx that comes with fallout 4 if you have it.

The files are windows files, you should put them in Windows/System32 if you downloaded the manually.

I figured it out myself when I redownloaded FO4. Running FO4 the first time gave me a first time setup which when the dll files got installed. I then downloaded a game with directx 12 that I had (Sid Meier Civilization 6) and again a first time setup ran and installed more files. I then cleaned the FO76 folder and redownloaded it and now everything works. Thanks for the help
As far as I'm aware I'm running DX12. I reinstalled FO4 and that did not help. Rebooted, and in fact got a Windows update anyways. I can get a little audio for the opening cinematic and it cuts out. I've made sure I'm on the right audio channels and what not. Tried different ones. I swear it's like this with every Bethesda game, I spend more time working on it than they do.

Specs just in case:
Windows 10 Home
Intel Core i7 4790K
16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070
931GB Western Digital SATA Hard Drive
I had issues with the sound cutting out but it was something to do with the jack lead not connecting tight enough to the PC.
Have you tried changing from 24 bit sound to 16 bit sound in audio settings?

Installing fallout 4 wont fix it, you need to start the game aswell so it install the necessary dx files for it first launch.
Found a way to fix it for Arctis. Make sure you install the extra software, scan for games, then add Fallout 76 to your games. Make sure it's in Game, and not Chat. Tried that before installing the software trick and it didn't matter, but it does cause problems after. As does surround sound sadly. YMMV.
Random question do you have a VR headset plugged in. Someone had a similar problem a long time ago near the games release when their VR headset was connected.
The game engine is weird about audio devices and voice chat. It will default to the sound output associated with voice input. That means if you're using a bluetooth headset, it will insist on having the input and output isolated to the headset. You won't be able to use speakers + headset microphone. This because a bigger problem when headsets have a low-quality output mode associated with the microphone as part of a bluetooth phone call mode.

Long story short, I had to disable my headset microphone completely (in the Windows Device Manager) and use my webcam microphone instead while using my headphones, otherwise Fallout defaults to the low-quality phone-mode output associated with the microphone. Only with Fallout.

Yeah what fixed it for me was uninstalling F76 and clean wiping it, so deleting the f76 folder from steamapps-common. Then installing Fallout 4 which runs DX11 and another game with DX12 like Civ 6, but make sure that when you run Fallout 4 and the other game for the first time steam actually runs the first time setup, if it doesnt you need to find another game. Then install F76 and that should work
