You need animal friend perk to tame deathclaws, but you can only tame deathclaws that spawn alone without a nest or anything else at a random encounter.

Been farming for pets since I first heard about taming them in this game and here's what I've learned after taming a couple of them:

1) You only need Animal Friend perk card to be able to tame. Wasteland Whisperer doesn't do anything for taming and no other factors in the game help with taming besides Animal Friend.

Rank 1 lets you tame: Attack Dogs, Cats, Mole Rats, Rabbits, Squirrels, Beavers, Chickens, Mongrels, Radrat, Wolves, Brahmin, Opossum, and Radstags.

Rank 2 lets you tame: Mirelurk Hunters, Snallygasters, Mirelurk Kings, Yao Guai, and Radtoads.

Rank 3 lets you tame: Deathclaws and Mega Sloths.

If you have a Rank 3 Animal Friend card you'll still be able to tame creatures from previous rankings as well.

2) You have to look up a random spawn location map somewhere online and go to any of the indicated spots. If you have Fallout 1st you can put your Survival Tent near the spawn location and just server hop at your tent until you find a pet you want to tame.

3) Potential tames can *only* spawn by themselves. If you find an encounter with 3 wolves over a dead brahmin for example, you cannot tame any of those wolves. The tamable creature will *only* spawn by itself and be friendly to you so long as you have the perk card equipped. Run up to it and hit the Tame key that shows up. You do not need to Pacify it, either. Only Tame. Also once tamed, you can unequip the perk card afterwards and the pet will stay at your CAMP.

4) Yes there are variants of each creature including Scorched, Diseased, and yes, Legendary too. I've mostly only seen Scorched tames out in Cranberry Bog and you can *intentionally* turn a tamable creature you've found into a Scorched if you happen to find a Scorchbeast nearby to lure to the tame and wait for it to do its gas cloud attack over the creature to turn it Scorched. Be WARNED: Scorched tames will attack random crap in your CAMP due to a bug with it, so it's advised to not tame Scorched variants.

Diseased are uncommon but not totally rare, and don't really do anything beneficial or detrimental either. More of a semi show off kind of thing.

Legendaries are by far the rarest and I've only come across 2 in people's CAMPs and never managed to get one myself, but they do exist.

Hope this info helps.

P.S. It's also definitely not just deathclaws you can tame btw. lol
since tamable enemies scale to player lvl how often do you "upgrade" your tamed pet?
A Corgi Feb 2, 2021 @ 9:29am
It's RNG on the upgrading. Sometimes you'll see a regular Mega Sloth, other times a Sluggish Mega Sloth, etc. for example. My main isn't in the several hundreds (he's only 120-something) and it seems that Mega Sloths are the only ones that have different level variants for him, and it's random which it'll be. As another example I only come across standard level 50 Deathclaws, never any other level variant.

So it's *possible* it becomes less sporadic the higher level you get but I'm not 100% sure since there's a bare minimum of info on that out there frankly (and I've tried looking too lol).

So while I'd hope you can "upgrade" them more easily as the levels go, it doesn't seem to be the case so far from what I can tell based on the Mega Sloth example from earlier.

Also edited my original reply with a bit more detail on the possible tames you can get.
