Died and lost all my crafting materials.
I did the NukaShine mission, and got transported way out. I should have fast travelled back, but decided to walk - mistake - I died. I chose to respawn back in safe territory, so left my gear behind.

Since I did not know that we drop gear when we die, I lost a whole load of materials. I tend to be a looter anyway, so I lost a lot.

I feel bad that the game does not tell how the dying mechanic works. Had I know, I might have been able to collect my stuff. ... Instead when I called for help, someone came over and did not revive me. I guess they were waiting to ransack my gear.

Given this becomes a race to get your gear back, and the hacking. Am not sure it's worth continuing.

I'm impressed that you made it that far in the game without dying and discovering the dropped bag of junk.

The lesson learned is you should always stash your junk frequently because you're going to drop what you are carrying.

And remember it's just junk and it's easily collected again.
OutsidR Jun 15, 2021 @ 7:26pm
Sure it is, there is so much scrap around you could make up what you lost easily. And yeah.. I got pasted on a dingy out west some where with a bunch of frogs (normal ones) chirping around with little damage to me lol.. kinda neat huh? Does not happen too much in the game though, at least I don't think so anyway....

Yeah i think I just figured that all scrap should be stored.

However I assumed that you have to have scrap on you, to be able to use it.

Thanks I assumed everyone did. I wasn't thinking I was doing well. No idea how a survived for so long. Probably because I was looting instead of playing, ha. I played for about 13.5 hours before i died.

The game does sort of explain it to you. Whenever you die, you get an objective and quest marker leading back to where you died telling you to get your dropped loot. Implying, you know, that you lost something. As others said though, it's not a big deal, you get bombarded with junk everywhere you go. Not to mention that once you get to a decent-ish level, when you have good gear and a proper camp built, you really only need it for maintaining your weapons and armor. But eh, if an experience like that is enough to get you to doubt the game, then I genuinely can not tell you whether you will enjoy playing beyond that

Yeah i think it just knocked the fun out of it for a while. Am playing on right now.

I lost stuff that took a long time to collect though. Like I think some materials are rarer than others. I even lost my box of stuff to set up camp. No worries though.

I am more concerned about hacking though. I generally don't even touch online games. .. After loosing so much stuff I googled for lost inventory, and read that hackers loot other players. Not my thing that type of game.

I think I'll play on while it's free though. (Sale price is good, but not quite convened to get it now.)

If this was offline Fallout 5, I be happy though. I like it in every other way.

Hackers don't loot other players

When you die you drop any junk in your inventory (unless its during an event), any player at all can pick it up then. Most won't, but they can.

As for the player sitting watching you die, probably got there too late to revive you, might have just wanted to take your junk for giggles.

It gives you a message that player XXX looted your things if they do

Exploits/Hacks can swipe items from your inventory IF you do a trade with them but thats pretty rare and its not going to happen to someone with your level of items

Cheaters are pretty prevalent here, but mostly just asshats using cheated gear. The actual people who spawned them in or used any kind of real hacks are very few and far between, it's just people using cheated garbage. Small hope though, microsoft seems to have done a better job of banning them since they took over.
As for the inventory steal, that happened in 2019 and got patched out after 2 or 3 days. Has never happened since then

Hackers don't loot other players; you're most likely to have your junk looted by a newb, as most of us are guilty of accidentally picking up someone's dropped loot. I've actually watched an entire public event turn against a high level player for looting the lower levels that died. Usually they'll shoot the bag to help you find it again.
The google result you found was likely dated; during a certain update a hack became available that would treat other players essentially as item containers. This was, to my knowledge, quickly mended. If there's a new hack along this line I'm sure it will be resolved shortly.
Remember junk is junk; that's why it's the stuff you can lose so easily.

I have played since beta and I have never been hacked nor have I known anyone that was hacked. I am not saying that it's not out there, but hacking another player isn't an issue you need to worry about. Most of the things people think are hacks are bugs (which every piece of software ever written has) that a simple server hop will usually fix. If not verify your game files in the Steam or Bethesda launcher.

1. TURN PACIFIST ON IN YOUR SETTINGS so you don't go attacking a level 600 player when you are level 15 and that level 600 player can't kill you.

2. All they can take is your junk, not your weapons, armor, meds, or caps. Junk is plentiful.

3. The way people loot other players is when you say go to a camp that is on a cliff. The camp owner logs out and you fall to your death.(get the Goat Legs perk) Another player who is friends of the camp owner stays logged in and grabs your loot. Is this a hack? No, its just some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who got creative and preys on people who don't know how to stash their junk.
Junk is abundant in the wasteland.

4. Another thing people can do is drag a monster to your camp to destroy it. Once again, this is just the inconvenience of having to rebuild broken objects with junk. It's a fallout game, junk is plentiful.

5. NEVER LOCKPICK @ ANOTHER PERSONS CAMP, you will become wanted. You will die and they will take your junk if you didn't store it. What is junk? Yeah you get the picture.

Previous FO games you had to have the junk on you or in FO4, it had to be stored in a workbench in a settlement you owned that was connected by a trade route.

In FO76, anything in your stash or scrap box is accessible to craft wherever you may be. There are also the stash boxes all over the place to aid in saving stuff.

Think about it this way. You freed up a bunch of space in your carried inventory? Not much consolation though.

Thanks everyone for assuring me inventory stealing is rare.

I think I might buy F76 then. The gunplay is good, and I like the easy pace.

I have quite a bit of work to do looting now. Like I am even low on plastic (for shotgun shells.) . ... Previously I only stored scrap in storage if I had a lot, like e.g. steel scrap. That was because I hadn't figured that workbenches can access scrap from storage. I basically had all my good scrap on me.

(I just had a look on the map to see if my lost scrap has a marker, but nope.)

Since it's kind of fun seeing other players zipping about, it's good that inventory stealing is finished.

Yeap, happened to me a couple of time to loose valuable junk ... !!! Take a break, do other things and come back ... . Sadly, it's part of the learning process, no worries ... . Next time you have valuable junk, plan a route to stash it in a "very" near future ... !
lucg Jun 15, 2021 @ 9:06pm
Plastic : Morgantown High School. Server hop (s) if it's looted and that's it ... , more than enough ... !!! If you have caps, Whitesprings vendor bots. Again, server hops has needed ... .

Now Imagine if dying mean a lot more, like 15% base exp loss, on low lv it would be 1lv, on 1k 5-10k downgrade. Or lossing actuall equipment part in proces, weapon, chest piece, arm piece, you get idea.
Now think how dying is meaningless and make you left only paper bag filled with junk.
