Melee got extra damage added with legendary perks, exploding palm for unarmed, hack and slash for VATS and one that can explode on kills.
They gives AOE damage that helps against groups and extra against single targets (bosses are highly resistant though).

That aside, my biggest issue with exploding palm is the amount of perk coins needed to get it reasonable - 5% base is basically a waste of a slot and even at 20% it wouldnt be reliable enough to tagging trash in a cluttered event where everyone has bloodied exploding heavy weapons.
It gains boosts with demolition expert and can trigger off rag dolls, just keep punching the dead guys. Even if only 20% we are talking about FO76 and bugginess, that 20% (Electric absorption is only 18% but is a PA 'must') triggers fairly often. It makes more unarmed options viable, like knuckles and boxing gloves.
Of all my characters the unarmed is the most fun (leveled after Legendary perks so can't compare to before) by far, ymmv. If your goal is to 1 shot bosses (ie. overkill everything else) then you'll never get that back, but really if you do that at public events your the villain.
i have seen otherwise, although i haven't tested. I watched an angry turtle video that said "the explosion is not affected by any perk cards etc. its just straight up 100 flat damage added to unarmed attacks 20% of the time" so im a little skeptical until i try for myself, unless you have video evidence of this etc.
No 1 shotting end game boss is unnecessary, i mean it would be fun to be able to do the math, and squeeze out as much damage as possible, and be one punch man again, i dont really care if i never get to 1 shot SBQ or Earl again. I do however care that the nerf is just really harsh. I watched a video of someone comparing all the nerfs, and some ners are like 17-20%, while the unarmed is over 70% in some cases "@14:39 shows unarmed" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDnqYDoYkbQ . I just want someone at Bethesda to be reasonable about the balance, and not spiteful. Unarmed needs a small buff, just a small one. I mean if i have 19% health, unyielding Secret Service armor "stats are through the roof, 50+ str for example", nerd rage, bloodied +1 strength +40% ATK SPD death claw gauntlet, Adrenal/twisted muscle/talons, fed up with 5-6 different DPS food, 3-4 drugs for stats/dps and vintage nukashine, i should be able to do a ton of damage. I just dont, and its laughable when you realize without all of that stuff, your almost doing the same damage by going with normal gear.
1 shotting those two shouldnt really be possible
