Does it make sense to use auto weapons?
They are very weak and I don't know how to keep up with the ammo :/

Automatic weapons aren't start weapons nor weak ones.
Most single shot weapons get ower shadowed by it.
And no if you have any problem with amo don't use weapon and especialy if it's automatic.

Yes it does especially after you have leveled up some of the perk cards

I'm guessing you are new to the game and still on low level. On low level they are a bit of a chore to keep fed, but after you get all perks you need to run full auto weapons ammo consumption isn't an issue anymore and you make much more damage than with semi-auto guns.
Game favors full auto ranged weapons heavily and their DPS is way, way higher than any melee/rifleman/gunslinger/demo expert build can pull out of their arse, especially if used stealthily and in VATS or if you have proper heavy guns&power armor build.
My commando's drop full level legendary scorchbeasts mid-flight faster than they can regenerate, takes 10-20 rounds if adrenaline is buffed up, they make 100-200 damage per hit to scorchbeast queen and can actually one shot L100 super mutants with VATS crits so ammo consumption isn't that bad.

Early game no you need perk cards
late game yes

Quick ammo guide
lucky hole mine with Excavator power armor for lead ore there is alot of ore
Flooded trainyard for acid just log to main menu enter again and boom new enemys to kill for acid.
Cargo bot events for cloth ( cloth + acid = gun powder)
Use scrapper perk when you scrap weapons to get alot of steel.

USE THE AMMO PERK CRAFTING CARD in agi and use the SUPER DUPER perk from luck

tag lead and acid so you always pick it up.

endless amounts of ammo

Use the ammo converts in peoples camps to convert ammo you don't use in to ammo you use.

Comes down to with my guns I can 1-3 shot enemies with a full rifleman build OR I can 1-3 shot dozens of enemies with a full commando build... the damage difference doesn't justify not being full auto

Then the DPS difference, commando is 100x more deadly than rifleman

Enemies that die in one hit die in one no matter if its commando or rifleman
if they die in two they die in two no matter its either 80% damage done or 68% damage done... either way 2 bullets
if they die in three they die in three its either 40/40/40 or its 34/34/34 Still a dead enemy

For crits

Rifleman you get one crit off say it does 500 damage
Commando you get one crit off + a followup for 800 damage at 100% hit, and your next shot brings you back to a crit

for dps. commando beats rifleman. You can get a really good rifleman build though. My first endgame build was speced for semi auto weapons. But ammo is a non factor now with perks and the legendary addition.

Thank you, yes, I'm relatively new.
I'll try to farm some ammo, but I haven't access to a power armor yet.

It take some time to plan the transition between semi and auto, but once the goal is reach, it's much more fun too ... !!! So keep grinding/farming until you have let's say, 1 perk card of each of the Commando build (Com. , Expert Com. , Master Com. ) and keep farming what you need to craft ammo (2 easy gyms, in Flatwood and at the Charleston Fire Dept. to farm lead in the forest, server hops if it's previously farmed).

Get a bunch of perk cards focused on automatic weapons. You'll go blow up heads left and right. Its worth it.

im new and even i've noticed the near OPness of 5.56 etc comared to say shotguns (even with perks to level shotties up) I often find myself swapping to assault rifles in difficult situations.

One thing i've learned in my short time on this game, perk cards for guns are worth it.

After reading this thread I decided to swap out my OP Rifleman build to Commando. Easy enough to get the cards due to multiple levelups just sitting in the can. Anyways, I swapped out the three 3-tier Rifleman p;erks to the three 3-tier Commando then changed my fixer and handmade receivers to powerful auto ones. Topped off my ammo and went on a test run in West Tek and Earle...... let's just say the advice to change is overwhelming. Mobs just melt and as long as you practice trigger burst control, you don't use as much ammo and you think. The only draw back is I lose a lot of punch with my long range Gauss Rifle. No worries, I just make up for it with a bit of ratta-tat-tat
