Accidentally wanted?
So I logged into the game and spawned next to a random location I had visited in the past. Happened upon a random chest and picked the lock. Did not realize that specific location was owned by another player. I have no interest in PVP, so I panicked and logged out immediately.

If I log back in, am I still going to be wanted? How long does this last?

(Also, if the person who owned that location sees this, I'm sorry. I had no idea that anyone had claimed that camp.)

I don't remember the exact time but it last for quite awhile.

That person probably had various items that he intentionally locked to trap new or unsuspecting players into become wanted.

When you log back in, get back to your camp (or nearest stash box), drop off your junk and fart around in someone's workshop area so they'll kill you. Wanted will go away after that.

You'll also lose some caps. I think it's an amount equal to your level.

Yes you will be wanted still. The only way to remove it is to have someone kill you once.

All you'll lose is your junk if you're carrying any. It'll fall in a bag that others can loot.

Oh, this wasn't a camp someone had built. It's just a container that already existed in the world.

I'm overencumbered, so I don't know that I'll be able to stash my junk before someone kills me. Oh well, won't be the first time I've lost everything, I guess.

You'll probably have time. Especially if you are a lower level. It used to be, and probably still is, a common practice to have a lower level player (wanted or unwanted) try and bait an attack from someone and have a much higher level hiding nearby lying in wait to return the favor. Used for cap farming.

If anything, you might have a harder time trying to find someone to kill you.

Yep this is true. I fell victim to it as well. I have no interest in PVP but there is an achievement mission for s.c.o.r.e. to kill a wanted player. I finally saw one that was a level 12 and I was around 45 at the time. I fast traveled near them and they were hiding in a claimed workshop that someone else owned. I thought maybe that's how they got wanted was they were messing around at the claimed workshop. Nope, I got blasted by the workshop owner in one shot while the wanted player hid. Lots of people were fooled too and the wanted level got up to 1000 before I got smart and quit the pursuit.

Well, I had to toss a bunch of food/drink items (which I left by the owned camp, so maybe the person would realize it was an accident), but was able to stash my junk.

About 30 mins later, I was in dialogue with an NPC when I heard someone behind me. So I exited the convo, turned around, and just stood there until they killed me. I had nothing on me, though, so they were probably disappointed, as they were gone when I respawned.

Thanks for the help, guys!

I did the same thing today. You should have time. It took about 30 minutes for me to be killed. I got tired of waiting and fast travelled to an event where there were plenty of players.

People who go after 5cap bounties are usually petty. 5 cap bounties are usually as I see it a rookie mistake or some goofball trying to pick his way into the more "secrecter" areas of a player camp.

Though if someone runs up to me and asks me to kill them, I make it quick. Some people can't stand being wanted because of the unknown variable of getting shot in the back and loosing their junk. By killing them you remove the bounty and that variable with agreeable ease.

Now when you got some guy running around with explosive mini-gun and a devil may care attitude burning down people's houses, that's a BIG CAPS kill.

Yeah this was me today. I messed up and just wanted to get it over with before moving on to a quest.

Ok, ya'll are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idiots. You don't want to be wanted, and the guy who kills you for your five cap bounty is doing you a massive ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ favor, not being "petty".

Go to a workshop or camp and pick a lock. Compare how many camps you can see with, and without, being wanted.

If you're wanted you can only see camps of your teammates. Wanted goes away when another player kills you.

It's not that big a deal, you loose a few caps and some junk when you die, and that's it.

Better yet, don't pick locks in camps and workshops. Crisis averted.

Well, no ♥♥♥♥. I wouldn't have done it if I had known the location was owned by a player.

I had literally just spawned. Didn't even have a chance to look at my map. The lock I picked wasn't one someone had built, just one that already existed in the world.

I didn't even get a notification until after I had already done it, so I panicked and immediately logged out. I was in-game for maybe a minute total lol.
