it takes a legit month and a half or so of daily grinding to max one of them (or abusing the raider bug you can do them in half an hour)
Honestly, gold is helpful for a few things, but nothing really amazing from it and you'll eventually have nothing but lunchbox's to buy
Reputation is helpful for a few things (raiders have an ammo production machine and the settlers have magical plant growing grenades)
this choise is even more viable after they changed the max daily exchangeable treasure notes.
if you keep all for yourself you only doom yourself for weeks of more faction grinding instead of gold bullions worth one days exchange plus one weeks buyout from the trader in the wayward (you even exeed what you gain with hold all gold yourself with that one days income since the raise of the exchange cap)
