Once it's open, you can see the entire inventory of the other player, including their equipped items, you can request some item and the other player can set the price of an any item (not only on what you requested).
but there is an emote that means lets trade.... people may step up and enter the P2P trade window with you.
from there its either put a price on a item you have that you want to sell or show item you want to trade, other player does the same in return or to offer an item for trade to you or set a price of an item to you vice versa. if everything looks good then both parties have to ok the trade and it goes off...sometimes some players have figured a way or use a script to screw with the rade window so they end up with items and caps or item for trade and item they put up etc... basically they get both windows you get empty hands.
player vending machines negate the need for P2P trading. set items you want to sell and let people know by powering your vending machine. dont want people to know youre selling but still want people who visit to buy things if they pass your camp? dontput power to the machines but fill them.
you can make a sign at your camp saying you have xxx item for trade and to contact you via friend request. also say what you are lookign for.
